Will Warren Terrible For New York Yankees In Game 2 Against Los Angeles Dodgers

Will Warren has pitched very well for the Yankees over his past four starts. There was some worry before the game that this stage was too big for him. He allowed seven earned runs in only 1.1 innings pitched. It proved not to be a low-scoring affair. The Dodgers won 18-2. Will Warren needed to pitch well, at least better than the ace of the Yankees’ staff, Max Fried, did last night. Did you have faith in Will Warren before the game?

Lineups For the Dodgers and Yankees

The Los Angeles Dodgers had Shohei Ohtani as the designated hitter, batting leadoff. Dalton Rushing pinch-hit for him in the eighth. Teoscar Hernandez was the right fielder batting second. Miguel Rojas entered the game for him in the fifth inning. Freddie Freeman was the first baseman, batting third. Kiki Hernandez replaced him in the fifth inning. Will Smith was the catcher, batting fourth. Max Muncy was the third baseman, batting fifth. Andy Pages was the center fielder and batted sixth. 

Michael Conforto was the left fielder and batted seventh. Tommy Edman was the second baseman and batted eighth. Hyeseong Kim was the shortstop and batted ninth. He moved to center field in the sixth inning. 

For the Yankees, Trent Grisham batted first and was the center fielder. Aaron Judge was the designated hitter and batted second. Cody Bellinger batted third and was the right fielder. Paul Goldschmidt was the first baseman and batted fourth. JC Escarra came in to play first for him. Jasson Dominguez was the left fielder and batted fifth. Anthony Volpe was the shortstop and batted sixth. Oswald Peraza came in for him in the eighth. Austin Wells was the catcher and batted seventh. DJ LeMahieu played second base and batted eighth.  Jorbit Vivas was the third baseman, batting ninth.

The Weather

The weather in Los Angeles was nice. It was 84 degrees Fahrenheit. Partly cloudy, and there was very little wind. So, the conditions were perfect. That was expected for Los Angeles. It was perfect baseball weather. The weather was great, but Will Warren was not.

Game Story

There was buzz for this game with both Judge and Ohtani hitting home runs in the first inning on Friday. Ohtani had two. Both players have strong supporting casts. However, Mookie Betts was out for the Dodgers. He stubbed his toe and fractured it, going to the bathroom in the middle of the night. Truth is stranger than fiction.

The Dodgers scored 10 runs in the first two innings. They made a mockery of this game. Their leadoff batter, Ohtani, batted for a third time before some people at the bottom of the Yankee batting order had even come to bat. Will Warren certainly did not help things. From a Yankee perspective, the only good thing about this offensive outburst was that there was a lot of time for the Yankees to come back, but it was not to be.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. had a successful first rehabilitation game at AA Somerset. Chisolm Jr. is rehabilitating from tears in his oblique muscle. Tellingly, he played third base and could end up in that position next week. The game was so out of control that the defensive changes happened in the fifth inning.

Scoring Summary

In the first inning, Smith doubled, and Ohtani scored. That made it 1-0 Dodgers and made Yankee fans fearful that Warren would have a bad game; he did. Muncy then singled, and Freeman scored. That made it 2-0 Dodgers. Then Conforto hit a sacrifice fly and Muncy scored. That made it 3-0 Dodgers.  Edmond doubled, and Muncy scored. The nightmare continued.

In the second inning, Muncy hit a three-run home run. T. Hernandez and Smith, who had both walked, scored. Warren walked the first two batters of the inning after giving up four runs in the first inning. It was 7-0 Dodgers. Tommy Edman hit a double, and Conforto scored. It was 8-0 Dodgers. Kim hit a two-run home run, and Tommy Edmon scored. It was 10-0 Dodgers.

In the fourth inning, Judge hit his 20th home run. A long solo short. That made it 10-1, Dodgers. In the fifth inning, Freeman doubled and Kim scored. It was 11-1 Dodgers. Also in the fifth inning, Muncy hit his second three-run home run of the game, and it was 14-1 Dodgers. Ohtani and Freeman scored. In the seventh inning, Pages hit a solo home run. It was 15-1 Dodgers.

In the eighth inning, Judge hit another home run. That made it 15-2 Dodgers. In the eighth inning, Dalton Rushing hit a three-run home run, and Edman and Kim scored. That made it 18-2, Dodgers. He hit that home run off Pablo Reyes, a position player. This game was horrible for New York. In the ninth inning, Kiki Hernandez pitched for the Dodgers another position player. Will Warren set a bad tone in this game.

Conclusion

This was an important game for the Yankees to win, given that they lost the first game of the series. But they had to go to the bullpen in the second inning.  Things looked good on paper for the Yankees, with a hot Warren going against an inexperienced Landon Knack. However, as we know, games are not played on paper. They are played by people who can have good or bad days. Warren had a bad day.
