New York Yankees Lose 1st Game With Max Fried Pitching

The New York Yankees lost their first game of the season with Max Fried starting for them. They had a good chance to win. The Yankees were 8-0 in his starts. It is a shame the shocked Yankees will not have him when they take on the rival Mets. Because of a gruesome injury, the Yankees got an important reinforcement for this series. Do you think the Yankees will rally to two games in this series?

The Seattle Mariners had J.P. Crawford as the shortstop and batting leadoff. Julio Rodríguez was the center fielder and batted second.  Cal Raleigh was the catcher and batted third. Randy Arozarena was the left fielder and was batting fourth. Mitch Garver was the designated hitter, batting fifth. Dylan Moore was the second baseman and batted sixth. Donovan Solano was the first baseman and batted seventh. Leody Taveras was the right fielder and batted eighth. Ben Williamson was the third baseman and batted ninth.

For the Yankees, Trent Grisham batted first and was the center fielder. Aaron Judge was the right fielder and batted second. Cody Bellinger batted third and was the left fielder. Paul Goldschmidt was the first baseman and batted fourth. Austin Wells was the catcher and batted fifth. Anthony Volpe was the shortstop and batted sixth. Jasson Dominguez was the designated hitter and batted seventh. Oswald Peraza was the third baseman batting eighth. Jorbit Vivas played second base and batted ninth.

Scoring Summary

Raleigh doubled in the fifth inning, and Rodriguez scored. That gave Seattle a 1-0 lead. In the ninth inning, Volpe reached base on a fielder’s choice as and Reyes scored. That tied the game at 1. Seattle walked it off in 11. Crawford scored. That led Seattle to win the game 2-1.

Game Notes

Cabrera, the Yankee third baseman, broke his left ankle Monday night in the ninth inning. He was taken off the field by ambulance. Cabrera was having a nice season, so it is too bad he got hurt. The Yankees put him on the 10 10-day IL and added DJ LeMahieu to the roster in a corresponding move. Fans hope LeMahieu can stay healthy and approximate some semblance of his past success. He is a two-time batting champion. The injury to Cabrera put a damper on the team.

Fried was second in the just-released Cy Young Award voting. The Yankees are rolling in his starts. Coming into the game, the Yankees have 74 home runs and lead the major leagues. They have a 10 home run lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have 64 home runs. Everyone has torpedo bats, so it is not those.

The Yankees’ young pitchers were at it again. Carlos Lagrange and his 101-mile-per-hour fastball. In each of his first five starts for High-A Hudson Valley Renegades, Lagrange has struck out seven or more batters in each of his first five starts. Cam Schlittler is also doing well. Beginning the year with Double-A Somerset, the 24-year-old has pitched to a 2.18 ERA in six games (five starts), striking out 36 batters in 33 innings.

The Yankees had been undefeated in games started by Fried. He pitched only 5 innings before Tim Hill blew the game in the 11th inning. Seattle had won 9 series in a row before getting swept by the Blue Jays. They play the rubber game of this series with the shocked Yankees this afternoon at 4:10.

Conclusion

New York still has a chance to win this series. After this series in Seattle, and an off day for travel, the Yankees play in the Subway Series against the New York Mets. The Mets are better than the Yankees, and slugger Juan Soto will play in The Bronx for the first time since he jilted the Yankees for the Mets.
