Game Notes: Reinforcements Arrive Soon for Yanks
The weather was hot for this game. At game time, it was in the upper eighties, and the was no chance of rain.Â
The Yankees are getting a lot of reinforcements back soon and will face some difficult roster decisions. First, in this series, the Yankees will get back DJ LeMahieu. This will give them a roster decision to make. Second, designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton took batting practice on the field before the last game against the San Diego Padres. He took the live batting practice off injured pitcher Jake Cousins. Third, relief pitcher Jonathan Loáisiga is currently at AAA Scranton, where he is expected to make five appearances before rejoining the Yankees.
That is a lot of good news. The Yankees need those reinforcements. But, there was more good news as New York’s first-round pick last year has been impressive in his first go-around with the High-A Hudson Valley Renegades. Ben Hess took a no-hitter into the seventh inning and retired 17 consecutive batters between the first and sixth. He lost the no-no bid. An infield single that deflected off him, but quickly induced a double play to end his evening after a professional-high 6 2/3 innings. Hess matched his season best with nine strikeouts and is averaging 14.04 K/9 to go along with a 3.24 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP. The Renegades won the game 12-1.
Max Fried, who has been outstanding this season, has broken into the top five of MLB’s power rankings. He was ranked number five in the rankings released Thursday.
The Yankees are starting this West Coast swing in Oakland. In a schedule oddity, the Yankees come home after playing two series and then go back out west in two weeks.
The Yankees got three home runs and a sacrifice fly from Dominguez. Maybe the Martian will break out now.
Will Warren was great in this start, pitching seven and a third innings for the Yankees.
Conclusion
The Athletics are surprisingly good. Coming into this game, they had a 20-18 record, almost as good as the Yankees’ at 21-16. With the reinforcements arriving for the Yankees, things were looking up for the Yankees. The Yankees not only won the battle last night, but they will soon win the war. It was good for the Yankees to start their first West Coast trip with a resounding 10-2 victory.
