Los Angeles Dodgers Star Shohei Ohtani Wins Second Straight NL MVP
The good times just keep on rolling for both the Dodgers and Shohei Ohtani, as the Japanese superstar took home National League MVP honors for the second straight year. This latest award gives him his 4th career MVP, with all four coming within the last five seasons. Ohtani also now has the second-most MVP Awards in MLB history, with only San Francisco Giants legend Barry Bonds possessing more career MVPs with 7.
Ohtani’s Overall Numbers
While Ohtani didn’t have as monstrous a 2025 NL MVP campaign compared to his 2024 season, it was still a spectacular season for the now four-time MVP. The Dodgers superstar hit 54 home runs to go along with 102 RBI, while serving as the designated hitter for Los Angeles.
He also posted an impressive slash line of .282/.392/.622 and also led the National League in runs scored with 146. All of those numbers ultimately led to Ohtani winning the MVP award unanimously this season.
Ohtani Falls Short Of MVP Trifecta
After winning the NLCS MVP one month ago and now regular season MVP honors today, he joined an exclusive club while also barely missing out on joining another one as well. Only seven players in Major League Baseball history have ever won regular-season MVP and either an LCS or World Series MVP in the same season, with Ohtani being the seventh player to join that list.
That list becomes even smaller when it comes to a player taking home all three MVP awards in the same season. The only player to achieve this feat was Willie Stargell during his legendary 1979 MLB season with the Pittsburgh Pirates. However, Ohtani fell just a few World Series MVP votes short of joining that even more exclusive club, with that award going to fellow Dodger teammate Yoshinobu Yamamoto.
Second NL MVP Caps Off Greatest Two-Year Stretch In Baseball History
When the Dodgers signed Ohtani to a record-breaking 10-year $700 million contract in 2023, this sort of success was expected, but not in quite as dominant a fashion. This past World Series saw the Dodgers become the first team since the dynastic New York Yankees of the late 90’s to win back-to-back World Series titles.
In just two years as a Dodger, he has put himself squarely atop the Mount Rushmore of baseball, with plenty of time left in his career to continue separating himself from his all-time competition.
