New York Mets Starting Pitcher Griffin Canning Expected To Suffer Catastrophic Injury
New York Mets Starting Pitcher Griffin Canning went down in a heap in the top of the 3rd inning of his start last night against the Atlanta Braves. His injury is expected to be to the Achilles. Even though the MRI did not confirm the diagnosis, Mets Manager Carlos Mendoza is not expecting a good result. “We think it’s an Achilles. He’s getting an MRI, we’re waiting for the results, but it looks like it’s an Achilles injury,” Mendoza said.
If Canning is diagnosed with an Achilles injury, he will be out for at least the remainder of the 2025 season. The veteran starting pitcher was having a strong 2025 season with the New York Mets. He was 7-3 with a 3.77 ERA. How will New York deal with another pitching injury?

The Mets were one of the best teams in the league over the first two months of the regular season. That had to do in large part with the performance of their pitching staff. New York is 3-10 over their last 13 games as their pitching has come back down to Earth. Injuries coupled with poor performance on the mound have exposed the pitching staff over the last two weeks.
Here is a short list of New York’s pitching injuries in 2025. Starting Pitcher Kodai Senga was recently placed in the IL, Starting Pitcher Sean Manaea has yet to make his season debut, star Relief Pitcher A.J. Minter made 13 appearances before suffering a season-ending injury, and Starting Pitcher Frankie Montas made his season earlier this week. The Mets saw their rotation get off to a historic start, but that feels like a lifetime ago.
Final Thoughts
Canning’s injury is the latest in a long line this season for the New York Mets. The team’s pitching staff has been taxed in recent weeks. Their job will only get more difficult with Canning’s injury. Following a miserable stretch of baseball, New York looks for its third straight win this evening on the road against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Mets will need their pitching staff to succeed without many key pieces.
