New York Mets Shortstop Francisco Lindor Makes Franchise History Against Philadelphia Phillies
New York Mets Shortstop Francisco Lindor made franchise history in the first inning tonight against the Philadelphia Phillies. He hit a leadoff home run in back-to-back games. He is only the third player in team history to accomplish this feat. Lindor joined Curtis Granderson in 2017 and Kaz Matsui in 2004 on that exclusive list.
New York Starting Pitcher Tylor Megill stifled Philadelphia’s bats Monday night. He tossed 5.1 scoreless innings and tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts. Solo home runs by Lindor and Designated Hitter Jesse Winker were the extent of the scoring until the bottom of the seventh. Lindor tacked on a three-run homer to finish the game with 4 RBI. It was his 20th multi-HR game. Lindor passed Trevor Story for the third-most games by a shortstop in MLB history.
Things got a bit dicey in the top of the ninth as the New York Mets turned to Closer Edwin Diaz to escape a jam with runners on first and second and no outs. He surrendered a three-run home run to Second Baseman Bryson Stott but secured the save and the 5-4 win. Will Lindor’s performance continue leading New York to victory?
New York Mets Season Summary
New York has lofty expectations this season after signing Juan Soto to the biggest contract in league history. The Mets have performed well this year. They are leading the National League East with a 16-7 record. New York’s offense has been mediocre to begin the year. They are 17th in batting average, 16th in home runs, and 16th in runs scored.Â
The team’s calling card has been its pitching staff this year. They are leading the league in ERA, the league leader in strikeouts, and third in opposing batting average. Even though New York’s pitching has been tremendous, the New York Mets will need their offense to carry the team as the season wears on.
Final Thoughts
Lindor will look to hit a leadoff home run for a third consecutive contest in the middle game of New York’s three-game set against the Philadelphia Phillies Tuesday night. After getting off to a slow start, Lindor has found his footing as of late. If he plays well, New York will be able to fulfill its World Series aspirations.
