New York Mets 2026 Preview: Star-Studded Roster Could Miss Playoffs For Second Consecutive Season
The New York Mets in 2026 could miss the playoffs just like in 2025. There is significant star power on the team, but that might not be enough. With several significant roster changes heading into the 2026 season, there will be a lot of new faces in Queens this season for the team with a top payroll that missed the playoffs last season.
The New York Mets had high expectations before last season after they signed Juan Soto to a 12-year, $765 million contract, but finished 83-79 and out of the playoffs. In 19 days, this team traded Brandon Nimmo and lost both Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz to free agency. Do you think the New York Mets will miss the playoffs again in 2026?
New York Mets 2026 Preview
Pitching
Star power may not be enough to help this team avoid the same fate that befell the last season. The starting pitching is young and questionable. Not so with the ace of the staff, ace Freddy Perata. They acquired him via trade, and he was outstanding last season. Behind him is Nolan McLean, who has pitched only 48 innings.
Sean Manaea is the third starter. He has injury questions after suffering elbow and oblique injuries last year. David Peterson and Kodai Senga round out the starting rotation. Senga had better statistics than Peterson last season.
In terms of the relief pitching, Devin Williams, the failed Yankee, will be the closer. The first option out of the bullpen will be another former Yankee, Clay Holmes. Lefty AJ Minter may be the third part of the game-ending trio, but he missed most of last season with a lat tear and is still out. Brooks Raley posted a 3.03 earned run average last season, so he is an effective bullpen piece. Luis Garcia and Tobias Meyers are other bullpen pieces.
Hitting
So the New York Mets’ pitching is suspect, is their hitting any better? At cacther, they have the oft-injured Francisco Alvarez. He will be backed up by Luis Torrens. He is a good hitter and defender. At first base, Jorge Polanco, who was signed as a free agent. He had a great year last season with a 46% hard hit rate. However, he has only played in 130 games four times in his career. He will be backed up by prospect Brett Baty or Mark Vientos.
At second base, Marcus Semien was acquired from the Texas Rangers. His hitting ability has decreased in the last two years, but he makes one of the best defensive middle-infields in the Majors with star Shortstop Francisco Lindor. Lindor is a hitting and fielding star while manning the key shortstop position. The third baseman is Bo Bichette, another free agent acquisition. He has never played third base, and his hitting ability declined last season.
In the outfield, the New York Mets have another star in Soto. He may be the best hitter in baseball. The New York Mets signed Luis Robert to play center field. He was a big prospect with the Chicago White Sox. The third outfield spot will go to Carsen Benge, the highest-ranked prospect the Mets have.
Mark Vientos is defensively limited and could be the designated hitter. Polanco played 89 games at designated hitter last year. So, he could get some at-bats at that spot.
Management
In terms of organization, it all starts with Owner Steve Cohen. He thinks he is the captain of the team and is willing to spend any amount of money to make the team better. David Stearns is the President of Baseball Operations. He built the Milwaukee Brewers, but the pressure is on following the playoff miss last season. Carlos Mendoza is the manager. He is also a former Yankee and is under some pressure.
Parting Shots
This could be another challenging season for the New York Mets. Despite a very high payroll and an aggressive owner, this team could miss the playoffs again this season. Important to their fortunes is the fate of the other teams in the National League East.
