New York Mets Will Be Involved In A Potential Tarik Skubal Trade
The New York Mets had a terrible season in 2025, missing the playoffs after signing Juan Soto to the largest contract in the history of North American Sports. David Stearns’ roster was exposed, and their lack of pitching hurt them down the stretch. With pitching being the focal point of the offseason, can the Mets land one of, if not the best, pitchers in the entire league?
Mets Are the Perfect Suitor For Skubal
It is no secret that the Mets will be looking to add a substantial amount of pitching this offseason. The whole rotation flat-out failed this past season, with the only bright spot being rookie sensation Nolan McLean. Rumors have been circulating that the Tigers could make their ace available on the trade market, after being far apart on a potential contract extension. Detroit would be smart to capitalize on his value and get a big return, rather than him leaving for nothing in free agency.
The Tigers would want young, major league-ready pitching and more in return for their left-handed ace. The Mets fit their needs perfectly, having everything in their farm system that Detroit would ask for. Potential names could be Brandon Sproat, Jonah Tong, and Jett Williams. If they can get a deal done for Skubal, Steve Cohen would be one of the few owners who have the ammunition to pay him when he becomes an unrestricted free agent next offseason.
No matter what team Skubal ends up on, he’ll become the highest-paid pitcher in the history of the sport. Zack Wheeler is currently the highest-paid pitcher, making $42 million per year, followed by Jacob deGrom, who is making $40 million per year. Skubal is only 28 years old and had the best year of his career in 2025. He pitched to a 2.21 ERA, a .089 WHIP, along with a 32.2% strikeout rate
Will the Tigers Trade Him?
The biggest question heading into the offseason will be whether or not the Tigers will seriously consider trading Skubal. Jon Heyman reported that the Tigers had a gap of “close to $250 million” in contract negotiations with Skubal. Detroit has to know internally that it’s unlikely to get an extension done, as Skubal is represented by Scott Boras. Anyone who knows Boras knows that he always lets his players enter free agency and will do anything it takes to get his clients paid top dollar.
If/when he hits free agency, every big market team is going to be involved in a bidding war. Detroit will not be able to keep up with teams like the Mets, Yankees, Dodgers, and many others. The Tigers would be taking a huge risk by dealing Skubal for unproven talent, but it may be wise to take that chance rather than wait and Skubal walk.
