Juan Soto Gives Met’s Fans a Glimpse, Hits 2 Home Runs
Juan Soto finally delivered his first big moment at Citi Field while wearing a New York Mets jersey. On Thursday night, in a 4-2 loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks, he crushed two home runs, giving Mets fans a glimpse of what he will be doing for them for the next 15 years in Flushing, Queens.Â
Soto Hits Two Home Runs at Citi Field
His first blast happened in the 6th inning, off Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen. Behind in a 0-1 count, to what looked like a hanging cutter, Soto hit the ball 106.4 mph, seeing it land in the left center stands, 391 feet away from the plate. Everyone in the stands immediately leaped to their feet, finally witnessing in person what they had seen repeatedly during his career on other teams.Â
Then, in the 8th inning, down 3-1, Soto took his time at the plate, seeing eight pitches, before blasting the 9th pitch from Kevin Ginkel, a 3-2 fastball, into the exact same spot as his home run in the 6th. His 5th of the year and second of the game had Ginkel throw up his hands immediately, and the Citi Field home run apple made its dominant appearance. The Mets would not be able to hold on and lost 4-2, but it’s a good sign that Soto is starting to lock in.
Soto is a once-in-a-lifetime, generational hitter out of the Dominican Republic. He made his debut in 2018 for the Washington Nationals at 19 years old and swept every baseball fan off their feet with how mature he is at the plate. He had brief stints for the San Diego Padres and New York Yankees before signing a massive 15-year, $765 million contract.
The Mets
The Mets are sitting pretty in first place in the National League East at 21-11 and three and a half games ahead of the second-place Philadelphia Phillies. After a huge offseason, the powerful offense has been living up to its expectations. Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor and Soto have been relatively unstoppable at the plate, and the bullpen has been as strong as ever.
