New York Yankees call up infielder George Lombard Jr to Triple-A

The New York Yankees are having a bit of a youth movement with the franchise as of late. As their prospects continue to improve and showcase their skills, they are seeing the fruits of their labor pay off. Let’s take a closer look at which player was able to get one step closer to making it to the Bronx.

YES Network’s Jack Curry is reporting that the New York Yankees are promoting George Lombard Jr. to Triple-A. He has been dominating at the plate with Double-A Somerset as he slashed .324/.414/.595 with four homers and 10 RBI across 19 games this season. The question was if his bat was ready for the promotion, as he is considered an excellent fielder, but that has clearly been shown.

The belief is that Lombard Jr. will play both shortstop and third base in Triple-A, making the New York Yankees have multiple places they can place him in the field if he is called up this season. The 20-year-old has been climbing the ranks and can play a critical role for the team as the season progresses.

He is considered to be the 27th-ranked prospect in MLB and the Yankees’ top-ranked prospect. The Yankees have some questions arising as shortstop Anthony Volpe is nearing a return to the majors following offseason surgery. However, the 2023 first-round draft pick has time before a potential MLB callup happens.

So far this season, the New York Yankees are 25th in third baseman Wins Above Replacement (-0.5). If the team does not want to make a big trade for a third baseman and Ryan McMahon isn’t able to improve, do not be surprised to see Lombard Jr. continue his ascent to New York and be on the 26-man roster. It will be intriguing to see how the star prospect looks against Triple-A pitching.
