Does the Arizona Diamondbacks Weekend Sweep Change Their Deadline Plans?
The Arizona Diamondbacks had a great series over the weekend against the St. Louis Cardinals. They swept the three-game series, with none of the games being particularly close, except for Sunday’s contest. The Diamondbacks outscored the Cardinals in the three games, 22-7, and looked like the better team this weekend. Did this successful weekend in Arizona change their mentality on how they approach the trade deadline?Â
Arizona Diamondbacks’ Place In Standings Is Something To Consider
Arizona is 4.5 games out of the last wild card spot in the National League. They are 50-50 on the season, and are the last of the teams when you look at the standings and say, “Maybe there’s a chance?” 4.5 games out is not that much, but there are teams in front of Arizona that surely will make moves to improve their team. The odds aren’t impossible that they make the playoffs, but they’ll likely wait until closer to the deadline day to assess their situation.Â
The Diamondbacks are getting hot, as they’re currently riding a four-game winning streak. If they keep this going, it might be enough to convince GM Mike Hazen to consider it. This team is full of questions as the deadline is quickly approaching.Â
Eugenio Suarez Is Another Story In Himself
Eugenio Suarez is having a monster year for Arizona. He’s mashed 35 home runs, has 85 RBI, and holds a .928 OPS. He’s having an unbelievable season and is being projected as one of, if not the most, prized possessions on the market. If the Arizona Diamondbacks decide to move Suarez, the return is going to be one of the best that a team will receive at the deadline, end of story.Â
For that reason alone, Suarez should be traded no matter what. His value is at an all-time high, and keeping him would be questionable given Arizona’s spot in the standings. Even if the Diamondbacks go on a crazy winning streak, they should still trade Suarez. There have also been rumors that the Arizona Diamondbacks could look to sell one of their pitchers, with Merrill Kelley or Zac Gallen.Â
Last Thoughts
The Arizona Diamondbacks have too good of trade chips not to sell, but they’re also in a position where buying could make sense based on where they are at the trade deadline. But they could do both, and maybe a return on Eugenio Suarez could land them something to help contend.Â
