Daulton Varsho Makes Insane Grab, Contender for Play of the Year
The Toronto Blue Jays are no strangers to amazing defensive plays, especially in their outfield. They’ve seen it from Kevin Pillar and George Springer, but now it’s Daulton Varsho’s turn. Fresh off the IL Tuesday, Varsho made a brilliant circus catch that left everyone in attendance in awe. He couldn’t help but smile after realizing what he had just done.
Varsho’s Insane Grab
In the top of the 4th inning, at home against the Boston Red Sox, and down 7-2, Jarren Duran stepped up to the plate. He swatted a 1-0 pitch to deep center field, sure to be over the wall, or at least extra bases. The home plate camera tracked the ball in the air, and Varsho can be seen running back towards the wall.
When Varsho hit the warning track, he lost his balance and tumbled to the ground, spinning away from the play. He quickly and deftly recovered, still on one knee, and turned his head to see where the ball was. Whether he knew it or not, it was still within range of where he was, so Varsho stuck his glove out, with his number five facing the field, and snagged the ball. The stadium erupted.
Pitcher Dillon Tate was clearly astounded as they cut to his reaction, as he threw his hands up in the air and looked back toward home plate, unsure of what he just witnessed. All the Blue Jays announcers could mutter was, “Did he catch that?” Yes, he caught that, in the most insane grab of the year.
Defense Isn’t New North of the Border
The Blue Jays have been known to highlight their defense when putting their teams together. In the past, they have had stellar performances from Pillar and Springer in the outfield, as well as consistent brick wall Matt Chapman. They signed Andres Jimenez this off-season, who won the Platinum Glove for the Cleveland Guardians. Now, they have Varsho, who has been known to put his body on the line day in and day out, usually by crashing into the wall at full speed.
