Chicago Cubs Acquire SP Edward Cabrera In Blockbuster Trade With Marlins
The Chicago Cubs have made their first big move of the offseason, landing young star Edward Cabrera in a trade with the Miami Marlins, per Michael Cerami of Bleacher Nation. Chicago has been looking to add a starter the entire offseason and land one of the best pitchers available on the trade market.
Cubs Closing In On Cabrera
Although a trade is not yet official, reports indicate that the Miami Marlins and the Chicago Cubs are nearing an agreement to send Edward Cabrera to the Cubs. In return, the Marlins would likely acquire the Cubs’ top outfield prospect, Owen Caisse, who’s a coveted player they have pursued for some time. At 23 years old, Caisse is a talented left-handed hitter with impressive plate skills and solid power, making him a candidate to contribute to the Marlins’ lineup immediately.
Cabrera offers tremendous upside, featuring an elite changeup and curveball that baffled hitters last season. While most changeups average 86–87 mph, Cabrera’s averages an impressive 94 mph. He complements these pitches with a four-seam fastball, sinker, and slider. Chicago would acquire a young, controllable pitcher with the potential to reach new heights.
Cabrera’s main concern is his injury history. He missed time last season with a right elbow sprain but still managed a career-high 137 innings pitched, after failing to surpass 100 innings in either of the previous two seasons. While injury risks remain, his impressive upside makes him well worth the gamble. Given the high cost of starting pitchers on the open market, acquiring Cabrera provides Chicago with an affordable, controllable starter under team control for three more years.
What Are The Marlins Getting Back?
With a deep rotation in place and General Manager Peter Bendix eager to bolster the offense, Owen Caisse is an ideal fit for Miami. He complements the team’s young talent, such as Kyle Stowers, and is a cost-effective, controllable asset the Marlins won’t need to extend in the near future. Caisse provides the potential for 30-plus home runs per season, thanks to his elite bat speed and exceptional plate discipline.
Parting ways with Edward Cabrera was certainly difficult, but it was the right move for the Marlins, who improved their roster with this trade. In 2025, Caisse posted an impressive 139 wRC+ over 99 games with the Iowa Cubs, tallying 22 home runs and 55 RBIs. Following this deal, the Marlins are unlikely to pursue additional major moves. Meanwhile, the Cubs’ situation has become far more intriguing. Their lineup still requires significant upgrades, and it remains to be seen whether they will target a marquee free agent like Bo Bichette or Alex Bregman.
