Cam Schlittler Seeks To Cut New York Yankees Deficit To 2
Cam Schlittler faced Kevin Gausman as the Yankees relied on the young pitcher to pitch as well as he has recently and get them off on the right foot. There was a lot of pressure on Schlittler. Gausman is having a good season, and Cam Schlittler has been outstanding in his brief time in the Major Leagues, throwing up zeros and throwing fastballs in excess of one hundred miles per hour. Schlittler had 66 pitches in 1.2 innings pitched. The Yankees lost this game 5-1. Do you think Schlittler will make the Yankees’ postseason roster?
Lineups For Yanks
The Blue Jays had George Springer leading off and as the designated hitter. Addison Barger was the right fielder and batted second. He was replaced by Myles Straw in the eighth inning. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. batted third and was the first baseman. Bo Bichette batted fourth and was the shortstop. Dalton Varsho was the center fielder and batted fifth. Alejandro Kirk was the catcher and batted sixth. Nathan Lukes was the left fielder and batted seventh. He moved to right field in the ninth. Ernie Clement was the third baseman and batted eighth. Andrés Gimenez was the second baseman and batted ninth.
For the Yankees, Trent Grisham played center field and led off. Ben Rice was the catcher and batted second. Aaron Judge was the right fielder and batted third. Cody Bellinger was the left fielder and batted fourth. Giancarlo Stanton was the designated hitter and batted fifth. Jazz Chisholm Jr. was the second baseman and batted sixth. Paul Goldschmidt was the first baseman and batted seventh. Ryan McMahon was the third baseman and batted eighth. Jose Caballero was the shortstop and batted ninth.
News and Notes
Chisholm Jr. hurt both of his knees in the last game in Houston. He iced them both before tonight’s game, and he had them evaluated by a doctor today. He was in the lineup tonight. The third game in Houston was delayed in the ninth inning when Yankee Manager Aaron Boone asked the umpires to confiscate the bat of former Yankee Taylor Trammell.
It was an issue with the label, which had been scratched out. Rule 3.02(c) reads, “No colored bat may be used in a professional game unless approved by Major League Baseball.” Trammell, who entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the seventh and struck out, used a bat with a lighter-colored handle and darker-colored barrel, which in itself is legal. Judge returned to right field for the Yankees. That was good news.
Game Reaction
There were two big lineup stories for the Yankees in this game. First, Judge played right field. This enabled Stanton to be the designated hitter, and allowed the Yankees to have both his bat and Stanton’s bat in the lineup. Second, Anthony Volpe sat, and Caballero played shortstop.
Schlittler threw 40 pitches in a nightmarish first inning. Then he tossed 26 pitches and got two outs in the second inning before he was removed for Ryan Yarbrough, who had just come off the injured list. The Yankees needed more than they got from the youngster. Yarbrough came in and saved his bacon. Hall of Famer CC Sabathia joined the television broadcast during the second through the fifth innings. He had good insight.
Scoring Summary
In the first inning, Bichette doubled, and Guerrero scored. It was 1-0 Blue Jays. Then, Lukes singled, and both Bichette and Varsho scored. It was 3-0 Blue Jays. In the second inning, Bichette hit a sacrifice fly and Barger scored. It was 4-0 Blue Jays.
In the second inning, Stanton hit a solo home run. The Blue Jays led 4-1. In the fifth inning, Guerrero Jr. hit a solo home run. The Blue Jays led 5-1. In the eighth inning, Clement doubled, and Kirk scored. It was 6-1 Blue Jays. In the ninth inning, Varsho doubled and Guerrero Jr. scored. It was 7-1 Blue Jays.
Conclusion
The Yankees needed more from Schlittler. When he struck out the first two batters of the game, viewers thought he was well on his way to another great outing. However, it was not to be as he lasted only to get two outs in the second inning. They had to go to the bullpen, and Schlittler, who had good stuff, had a setback in his quest for a spot in the playoff starting rotation for the New York Yankees.
