Los Angels Angels Host New York Yankees In 2nd Game Of Epic Series
The Angels will struggle to win the second game of their series against the New York Yankees. Carlos Rodon is likely starting for the Yankees against Angels starter Tyler Anderson. Anderson does have good numbers, but Rodon, like the rest of the Yankees, has been rolling recently.
Rodon has had four consecutive good starts for the Yankees. The Angels have not been hitting recently and were shut out by the Marlins on Sunday. They are likely to be challenged by Rodon if he is the starting pitcher for the New York Yankees.
The Yankees Kids are Okay
The Yankees pitchers in the minor leagues are doing well, and one of their top prospects is at AA Somerset. George Lombard Jr. joined the AA Somerset Patriots on their road trip in Akron, Ohio. He is only 19 years old, but the Yankees hope he can one day replace the current Yankee shortstop, Anthony Volpe.
Lombard is the No. 44 overall in Major League Baseball. Lombard performed well in big league camp in the spring. Of his three weeks, Lombard said, “It’s been good; it’s still baseball, it’s still [hitting] pitches. At the end of the day, you’re still going out there and playing the game. You’re still competing. So that part is always going to stay the same.”
Yankees-Angels Pitching Matchup
Anderson will be the starting pitcher for the Angels. He is a left-handed pitcher with good statistics. He has a 3.60 earned run average, but with only 43 strikeouts in 55 innings, he is not the type of strikeout pitcher that gives the Yankees trouble. With 23 walks in those 55 innings, he does tend to walk many batters. The Yankees are patient, so they will likely walk a lot in the second game of the series.
The Yankees have not named a starting pitcher for the second game against the Angels. But it is probably Carlos Rodon’s turn in the rotation. If that is the case, he has turned a corner. He has many strikeouts and has had four consecutive good starts. It was once the case that Yankee fans dreaded his starts. However, that is no longer the case. Rodon has been strong this season for the Yankees and should handle the Angels.
JC Escarra Makes His Mark
Yankees backup catcher, who has an unbelievable story, had three hits yesterday. Among other things, while he bounced around the minor leagues, in and out of baseball, he was an Uber driver. So, that he made the Yankees is a great accomplishment. So, he had his game yesterday against the Colorado Rockies.
Escarra, who made his Major League Baseball debut on March 29, had a .195 batting average entering the series finale in Colorado. But he got his moment in the sun on Sunday (after a one-hour and forty-six-minute rain delay). The sun came out and shone on Escarra. In addition to his clutch single in the eighth inning, which gave the Yankees what proved to be a vital run in the eighth inning, the 30-year-old catcher doubled in a run in the second and singled in the fourth. It is difficult to stay ready when you will once a week, but Escarra was. He is now prepared to face the Angels.
The Yanks Are #4 In Most Recent Power Rankings
In the most recent Major League Baseball power rankings, put out by ESPN, the Yankees are up to No. 4. That is the high-water mark for the Yankees. Traditionally, the Memorial Day weekend is the time when fans look at the standings, and they are meaningful. With an 8-2 record in their last 10 games and a 6-game lead in the American League East, things are looking up for the Yankees at a crucial time.
Conclusion
Expect this second game of the series between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Angels to be a low-scoring affair. If Rodon is named the starting pitcher for the Yankees, he is likely to pitch well against the light-hitting Angels. Anderson, LA’s starting pitcher, does not have the kind of statistics the Yankees struggle with, but if the Yankees do not hit home runs, they do not win. So, if Anderson keeps them in the ballpark, he may do well too.
