Angels and Braves Game Disrupted By Jorge Soler and Reynaldo López Literally Throwing Punches
On Tuesday night, the Los Angeles Angels played the Atlanta Braves. That is probably not news to most Angels fans, but something unexpected went down that night. It appears that some of the players forgot it was a baseball game and started boxing. Just kidding. Kind of.
The Escalation
So what should have been an enjoyable baseball game for fans ended up being a bit of a scary situation when Angels Designated Hitter Jorge Soler and Braves Pitcher Reynaldo López began attacking each other. It may have seemed bizarre and spontaneous, but there were a couple of things leading up to it.
In the first inning, Soler homered off López, which López was not too thrilled about. Then in the third inning, López got his revenge by hitting Soler in the hand with a fastball. Ouch! Then came the fifth inning, in which López threw a high-and-inside pitch, which came uncomfortably close to Soler’s head. At this point, Soler got more than a bit hot around the collar. He was sure that López did that on purpose.
After that, they had some words. Soler said that apparently he asked López if he was okay, and he did not like the answer. I guess that is all we need to know about their fun little conversation for now. López swears that the pitch was not intentional and there was a misunderstanding, but there seem to be some conflicting accounts.
The Brawl and Its Consequences
Soler began to charge the mound. López actually still had the baseball in his hand when he punched Soler in the helmet. If it were me, I would have put down the baseball before throwing a punch, but whatever floats your boat.
Both players were ejected and were given seven-game suspensions. Although López has negotiated his suspension to five games. In the end, the Angels lost to the Braves.
This brawl was very disappointing to see, and the interactions between Soler and López were petty to say the least. They acted like children and disrupted what should have been a great game. It just shows the damage that can be done when people let anger and personal grudges dictate actions.
What Will the Rest Of the Season Hold For These Players?
Soler is known as a fantastic power hitter and was named World Series MVP with the Atlanta Braves in 2021. López is a big part of the Braves’ rotation, and some debated as to whether or not he could potentially be the Braves’ MVP before the incident on Tuesday night.
They had such bright futures that they basically just threw a wrench into it by losing their tempers. They have no excuse to be acting that way during a game.
On Tuesday night, they allowed themselves to lose their heads and get out of control, and now they are reaping the consequences of their actions. Simple as that. Maybe going forward, when their suspensions are over, they will be on better behavior and have learned their lessons. Regardless, it will be hard for fans to have the same respect for them that they used to.
