2-2 Split Possible if Yanks Beat Impressive Crochet

A split for the Yankees was possible, though it was a strict order against Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet. The Yankees would be lucky to earn a split in this series, given their poor performance so far. Even with the Yankees winning the next two games and earning a split, the Red Sox have won the season series.

That means if the Yankees and the Red Sox finished tied, the Red Sox have the tiebreaker. The Yankees have made several key errors in this series. They do not deserve a split. They deserve to be swept. They may be after losing this game. Do the Yankees look like a playoff team to you?

Lineups as Yanks go for Split

The Red Sox had Roman Anthony leading off and playing right field. Alex Bregman was the third baseman and batted second. Jarron Duran batted third and was the left fielder. Jhostynxon Garcia took over for him in the ninth inning.  Trevor Story batted fourth and was the shortstop. Nathaniel Lowe was the first baseman and batted fifth.

Masataka Yoshida was the designated hitter and batted sixth. Ceddanne Rafaela was the center fielder and batted seventh. David Harrison was the second baseman and batted eighth. Carlos Narváez was the catcher and batted ninth.

As the Yankees went for the split, Paul Goldschmidt played first baseman and led off. Aaron Judge was the designated hitter and batted second. Cody Bellinger was the left fielder and batted third. Giancarlo Stanton was the right fielder and batted fourth.

Ahmed Rosario was the third baseman and batted fifth. Jazz Chisolm Jr. Pintch hit for him in the eighth inning. He stayed in to play third base. Trent Grisham was the center fielder and batted sixth. Anthony Volpe was the shortstop and batted seventh. José Caballero was the second baseman and batted eighth. Austin Wells was the catcher and batted ninth.

News and Notes

The Yankees lost to rival Boston last night in embarrassing fashion. They made a variety of mental and physical errors in a game that saw them fail to advance a runner to second base. Shortstop Volpe, who is one for his last twenty-five, made a horrid mental error in the ninth inning.

He was booed lustily then, and when he badly missed a change-up and struck out in the eighth inning. In summary, the Yankees have dropped the first two games in this series, their biggest one of the year, and have looked unprepared to play these games.

It was a good sign for the Yankees that Max Fried threw six shutout innings last night. This was a stark departure from his string of bad starts since July 1st. The only problem was that the Yankees’ offense failed to produce in the game.

It was a beautiful day at Yankee Stadium, 82 degrees and sunny, but if the Yankees are going to make the same kind of mistakes they made last night, the kind of mistakes they have been making for three months, they will lose to Crochet.

Game Reaction

Garret Crochet, the starting pitcher for the Red Sox, was impressive. On the season, he is 13-5, and he has a 2.41 earned run average. Particularly problematic for the Yankees, Crochet is a strikeout pitcher with 199 strikeouts coming into this game. With the runs scored in the third inning, the Red Sox starter looked to have all the runs he needed

To earn a split in this series, the Yankees needed more than five bad innings from their starter Will Warren. That short outing meant that the Yankees needed to get fifteen outs from their bullpen. Included in that mess was Paul Blackburn making his Yankees’ debut.

The former Met pitched well. Even though Blackburn pitched until the joke of a 9th inning. The Yankees gave up too many runs to earn a series split. Not so much. The Yankees were embarrassed at home by the Red Sox.

Scoring Summary

In the third inning, Bregman doubled and both Navarez and Anthony scored. That gave the Red Sox a 2-0 lead. Boston scored two more runs in the fourth inning. First, Anthony hit a sacrifice fly, then Bregman hit a sacrifice fly. With those two runs, the Red Sox took a 2-0 lead. In the fourth inning, Stanton hit a solo home run.

The Yankees cut the Boston lead to 4-1. In the fifth inning, Story hit a solo home run. The Red Sox re-established a 4-run lead. They led 5-1. In the ninth inning, Duran singled and Anthony scored. It was 6-1 Red Sox.  Then Lowe scored, and Duran scored. It was 7-1 Red Sox. Then Rafala signed, and Story scored. It was 8-1 Red Sox.

Then Hamilton singled, and Volpe made another error. Lowe scored, and it was 9-1 Red Sox. Far from earning a split, the Yankees are getting embarrassed at home. Then Rafala scored on a black by Blackburn. It was 10-1 Red Sox. Then Narvaez hit a two-run home run, and Hamilton scored. It was 12-1 Red Sox.

Conclusion

The Yankees, with two losses to the rival Red Sox, can hope for a split in this series. They faced a tough test in Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet. They have fallen out of the first Wild Card position in the American League and lost the season series to the Red Sox. They do not look like a playoff team.
