The reason Aaron Judge will not contend is due to past injuries after competing in the derby. Along with Judge is the Dodgers Shohei Ohtani missing the home run derby due to injury issues. The issue for the MLB all-star weekend is that the major stars will be skipping the event. Even with some stars at the event, the bigger names could bring in casual viewers.

During the MLB all-star weekend, Gunnar Henderson is competing in the home run derby with power. Henderson is a growing superstar for the Orioles and could be a crucial marketing piece for baseball right now. With Gunnar Henderson having 27 home runs, he could be the favorite for the derby.
While the Home Run Derby has Gunnar Henderson and his power, surprisingly the derby had Alec Bohm of the Phillies. While the Phillies have power this season, Alec Bohm is not one of them. Bohm this season has 11 home runs with 70 RBIs and 28 doubles.
The selection for this derby is strange due to his high doubles and lack of home run power. While the bracket is not complete, this selection is strange due to the lack of power from Bohm this season. Along with the lack of power, this event can also be a strain on players after the derby. This could harm Bohm’s hitting in the long term if not taken care of after.

This year’s Home Run Derby looks to be a disappointment for fans next and will have a weaker bracket. Along with that is the weak selection for the Home Run Derby which is flawed in itself.
The lack of star power in the home run derby like Aaron Judge, and Shohei Ohtani will not allow the league to bring in new fans during a time when the league wants to showcase the game’s best and brightest. Along with the lack of star power, getting players with a lack of power could damage the reputation of the derby.
While the prestige of the Home Run Derby is not the same, missing MLB all-star power bats would not bring new viewers to the game.
