Minnesota Vikings Mock Draft 2.0

Minnesota Vikings

The Minnesota Vikings currently have two first-round picks in the NFL Draft. The conventional wisdom is that they will use both picks and more to trade up and select one of the marquee quarterbacks early in the proceedings. Think Drake Maye or J.J. McCarthy.

Between now and the beginning of the draft later today, I will run a series of mock drafts with different scenarios to show the variety of outcomes that their choices may produce. If you don’t like the current mock draft you are viewing, stick around. There will eventually be one that is more agreeable to you.

My opening scenario involves the Vikings playing it straight up and not executing a single draft-related trade. It’s kind of boring, I know, but I wanted to present this scenario even if it is unlikely to go this way.

With the 11th pick in the 2024 NFL draft, the Minnesota Vikings select quarterback J.J. McCarthy from the University of Michigan. Minnesota would be available at number 11. McCarthy is maybe the best all-around quarterback available. He has advanced skill sets and natural leadership qualities. He just needs a year or two to develop and learn the system.

The Vikings know that they need to upgrade their talent pool at the cornerback position. Hence, with the 23rd pick in the draft, Minnesota takes Kool-Aid McKinstry from Alabama. This savvy pass disrupter is the type of athlete who will excel in defensive coordinator Brian Flores’ defense.

The 2023 Vikings lacked an effective interior pass rush. To address this, the Vikings select Duke defensive tackle DeWayne Carter. This powerful pass rusher will leverage his speed and balance to terrorize opposing quarterbacks.

Minnesota Vikings Fill a Hole on the Offensive Line

With the loss of Dalton Risner, the Vikings have a hole to fill at left guard. Brandon Coleman, the fast-rising athletic powerhouse out of TCU, at pick 129, will be exactly what the doctor ordered.

Minnesota selects Penn State center Hunter Nourzad with the 157th pick in the draft. Incumbent center Garrett Bradbury has always been a disappointment with his pass blocking. The underrated Nittany Lion has great leverage and a solid base and won’t get pushed around by the league’s more physical defensive tackles.

The Vikings need a little more depth at the running back position. Aaron Jones and Ty Chandler will split the majority of the carries, but the team is still a little thin at the position. Issac Guerendo, from Louisville, is shifty and possesses great field vision. His great hands and blocking ability also will provide him opportunities to be a three-down back. He could be a steal with the 167th pick.

Adding Depth

To increase their depth at some key positions, the Vikings ended their draft by taking Ohio State linebacker Tommy Eichenberg,
