Milwaukee Brewers Make Wrong Type Of History

The Milwaukee Brewers have a tall task in front of them tonight.

The Milwaukee Brewers were in a familiar yet painful situation during their playoff opener against the New York Mets. Despite starting strong, they ultimately lost 8-4, blowing another multi-run lead. This latest defeat puts the Brewers on the edge of an early postseason exit and marks a troubling trend in their playoff history.

 A Promising Start

Hope sprang at the crack of opening the game for the Milwaukee Brewers as they took an early 2-0 lead behind a William Contreras RBI single and a hit batter call that plated another run. The upbeat energy resided in the hope that this could be the game to end their playoff luck; however, that hope faded quickly as the Mets were not going down without a fight as three runs in the second inning erased the early hope the Milwaukee Brewers had.

The game changed in the fifth inning. Milwaukee regained its 4-3 lead and seemed to be well on its way to a win. Then the bullpen, which had done so much great work during the season, disintegrated. Relievers Joel Payamps and Aaron Ashby let five runs across, and a big swing in momentum. It was a tough pill to swallow for fans who had high expectations for this season.

Historic Blown Leads

With this loss, the Milwaukee Brewers made an unwanted piece of MLB history: they became the first team to blow a multi-run lead in four consecutive postseason games.  The Milwaukee Brewers blew similar leads in all their last three playoff games, and this does not help a franchise that still hasn’t overcome their struggles in the postseason. Each loss seems to weigh heavier, and the pressure builds as they try to break this pattern.

Milwaukee Brewers Manager Pat Murphy had to explain his decision to pull Freddy Peralta after only 68 pitches. Many felt Peralta had been gaining momentum after setting down nine in a row. Murphy said he felt Peralta was tiring, and he did not him to face the batters more than he had to. Whatever the reasoning, it was dismissed a bit as the Mets took full advantage of the move.

Milwaukee Brewers Fans Must Hope For a Miracle

What’s at stake for the Brewers: Their chance to continue the postseason alive ahead of Game 2 in Milwaukee. Frankie Montas will take the mound for the Brewers, but he’ll face a stiff challenge in the form of New York Mets lefty Sean Manaea. Another loss and another early exit. It will be a disappointing end to a season that started with plenty of promise. The Milwaukee Brewers of late have struggled to get into a rhythm and cash in on early leads.

The Milwaukee Brewers faithful can only hope their team will turn it around. They have seen their Brewers play very well in regular season-type situations but fold when it counts. So, these are do-or-die games. Milwaukee needs to step up and break this cycle of blown leads and heartbreaking disappointments. The stakes are high, and the team must come together to make sure not to add another entry in the history books. Hopefully, with determination and teamwork, they may be able to turn things around and give their loyal fans that postseason success they crave so much.
