The Michigan Wolverines basketball program will look very different next season. After an abysmal season this past year, the program dismissed head coach Juwan Howard. They brought in former Florida Atlantic University head coach Dusty May, and it seems that players around the country want to play for him. May was able to land another elite talent out of the transfer portal, Auburn guard Tre Donaldson.

The Michigan Wolverines have brought in a lot of talent this weekend. It started with Dusty May getting his first commitment in Justin Pippen. This was a high-profile commitment, as he is the son of six-time NBA champion Scottie Pippen. The Wolverines weren’t done. They landed former Yale center Danny Wolf who was a key piece on both ends of the floor last season.
Tre Donaldson brings elite playmaking to the Wolverines. With the Tigers, he started ten of the 35 games last year. His stats may not seem spectacular, as he only averaged 6.7 points, 2.4 rebounds, and 3.2 assists in 19.3 minutes per game. However, he shot over 40 percent from three and led the team in total assists.
Texas A&M head coach Buzz Williams raved about Donaldson after a January loss to the Tigers. “You could argue [Donaldson] is maybe the most improved freshman to sophomore perimeter [player] that I’ve studied thus in far the league,” Williams said. This is some high praise from one of the better coaches in college basketball. Michigan hopes that, with an expanded role, he can take a leap next season.
Expectations Are Rising
Dusty May has shown he can take a team to the Final Four. He took the Owls to a Final Four two years ago, showing he can win with a talent deficiency. Talent will not be a problem for the Michigan Wolverines. The transfer portal has its issues but it does allow for a new head coach to come into a program and change it overnight. A month ago, things looked bleak. Now, fans are starting to get excited about where this team is going.
The Michigan Wolverines are having a great offseason so far. However, championships are not won in the offseason. While all of this talent is a good thing, May and his staff will have to figure out how to put all the pieces together. College basketball is different from any other sport. The Wolverines have to show promise and be good enough to get into the NCAA Tournament. From there, anything is possible. Wolverines fans are excited, and it will be interesting to see who else comes to Ann Arbor.
