The Miami Dolphins are securing a fifth year for two explosive pieces on its young core. The team has been active so far this offseason, bringing in free agents to bolster the roster with proven veteran talent. But this move locks in budding stars on each side of the ball and could be the first step towards long-term deals with the team down the road.
Miami Dolphins Secure Fifth Year from Players
The Dolphins have exercised their fifth-year option on wide receiver Jaylen Waddle and linebacker Jaelan Phillips. Both players were selected by the Dolphins in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, Waddle at No. Six and Phillips at No. 18. They have been key building blocks for Miami throughout their first three years in the league.
Jaylen Waddle Has Produced Since Day 1
Since coming into the league as the sixth pick out of Alabama, where he starred alongside future teammate Tua Tagovailoa, Jaylen Waddle has done nothing but produce. He set an NFL rookie record with 104 receptions in his first year and has produced 1,000-yard receiving seasons in each of his first three campaigns with the Dolphins. Last season working across from first-team All-Pro receiver Tyreek Hill, Waddle tallied 72 catches for 1,014 yards and 4 touchdowns.
He could be in line for a big extension from the Dolphins as we head towards the 2024 season’s kickoff. DeVonta Smith, another receiver drafted four slots behind Waddle, just signed a massive three-year, $75 million pact to stay with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Jaelan Phillips is Worth the Wait
Jaelan Phillips has been an impact player on this defense since the moment he stepped off the plane in Miami. The University of Miami product set the Dolphins rookie record for sacks with 8.5 in his debut season. He backed that up with 7 sacks in 2022 and 6.5 in just eight games last season.
His 2023 campaign was cut short due to a torn Achilles. Phillips has a history of severe injuries. He medically retired while playing at UCLA before being cleared and transferring to Miami. Despite that, picking up the fifth-year option is a clear indication that the team has full confidence Phillips will fully recover from the injury. For a young player with this much talent, that feels like a wise bet.
