Manchester City has always been one of the best sides in the FA WSL, the top division of female football in England. But recent years have seen coaching errors, player transfers, and injuries hamper their once-unbeaten win streak.
Other teams, like Arsenal and Chelsea FC with Emma Hayes, have bettered their performances and clinched titles and cup trophies. However, Manchester City are now doing all they can to get back to where they rightfully belong – right in contention for the coveted title of the 2023-2024 FA WSL Champions.

Football is all about seeing young players come through the ranks and veteran players showing them how it’s done. Teams like Barcelona had Pique to show Messi how to become the star that he is, and the U.S. Women’s National Team had Abby Wambach to mentor Megan Rapinoe.
In the case of Manchester City, Mary Fowler has numerous people to look up to as she increases her confidence, boosts her playing time, and becomes an impact player on this already-stacked squad.
Fowler scored two incredible goals for City this past game to propel her team to three pivotal points that will make them just a little bit closer to earning the FA WSL title.
Although at times other players are favored over Fowler in the starting lineup, she took this opportunity to show why she should always be on the field.
Bunny Shaw, who is out with a foot injury, could no longer be the team’s go-to when it came to finding goals. That is where Mary Fowler stepped in and netted two fantastic shots in a 4-0 win over struggling Bristol City.
Did she expect to score two bangers in such a pivotal game? Maybe.
‘I’ve been having some shocking shots in training so I just hoped that one was going to go on target.’
And it did – twice.
Looking Forward for Manchester City
The end of the season is very close for all FA WSL teams. The only thing that fans know for certain is that Bristol City who is in last place will definitely be relegated to the second division, the FA Championship, and Crystal Palace F.C. are promoted to the Women’s Super League for the first time ever.
However, the top spot in the FA WSL remains unclenched.
Next week, City play Arsenal, which will no doubt be the game of the year. Man City are in the top spot with 52 points in 20 games, but Chelsea are close behind and have only played 18 games.
Arsenal are in third place with 44 points, so they are just too far away to earn the trophy – but they can prevent City from winning the league.
Chelsea will face off against Bristol City next week, and they will no doubt see a win. Then, they have a make-up game against Tottenham for a mid-week clash.
If Chelsea win both of these games, the title race might come down to the very last match. Despite having key players out for injury, they are still one of the top teams in the league.
The final day is Chelsea versus Manchester United, and Manchester City plays Aston Villa. If Chelsea can continue their win streak, they could clinch the title. Manchester City hopes these mid-week games catch up with Emma Hayes’ side and cause fatigue.
And Mary Fowler will be waiting in the wings to score more pivotal goals for her team.
