Mady Villiers is creating her name in English cricket, proving her abilities as both a spinner and a lower-order batsman. But Mady Villiers recently signed a three-year deal with Durham. She left her native county, Essex. Her leadership expertise was instrumental to the Oval Invincibles’ success in the Women’s Hundred, where they won consecutive titles. She will now join a team led by her England teammate, Hollie Armitage, as Durham prepares to participate in women’s domestic cricket.
Mady Villiers Moves North To Help Durham
Durham upgraded their women’s team ahead of next year’s new county tournament start by hiring England off-spinning all rounder Mady Villiers on a three-year contract. Villiers has represented England on 20 occasions, the most recent being during their tour of Ireland, where her death-over bowling almost saved two victories.
In all, she has taken 221 white-ball wickets in her professional career, having already topped 2000 career runs with eight half-centuries. She has been an ever-present for Oval Invincibles in the Women’s Hundred, assisting the team to win consecutive titles in 2021 and 2022. Her transfer to Durham is a coup for the club, which is set to take over from the Headingley-based Northern Diamonds as the North-East regional representatives in women’s domestic cricket ahead of Yorkshire’s Tier 1 promotion in 2026.
Mady Villiers, who came up via the Essex route, has chosen not to continue with her home county. Essex will also earn Tier 1 status in 2025 when they take over from Sunrisers, who won the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy final last week. Villiers played ten matches in the 2024 Charlotte Edwards Cup, an elite T20 competition that will be replaced by the T20 Blast. She scored a massive 131 runs with a strike rate of 116.96.
In 2023, Mady Villiers played in seven matches, hitting 55 runs at a strike rate of 100 and taking ten wickets with an economy of 6.36. During the 2022 season, she appeared in 5 matches, scoring 54 runs with a strike rate of 114.89 and taking 5 wickets with an economy rate of 8.23. Her regular efforts have been crucial to her team’s success.

Mady Villiers will now be captained by her England teammate, Hollie Armitage. “I’m excited to be joining Durham ahead of the 2025 season,” the 26-year-old said. “Having played in Essex for my whole career it was going to take a lot for me to leave, and I think that speaks volumes on how I feel about Durham and the potential we have as a collective. I can’t wait to get going and see where this team can go over the next few years,” she explained.
Furthermore, Director of Cricket, Marcus North said: “We are thrilled to announce Mady has agreed to join Durham on a three-year deal. Our squad is coming together nicely and to be able to recruit an England international in Mady Villiers is huge for us and the region.” He added, “Hopefully her move to Durham will see her thrive in the county as she looks to add more England caps to her name and further excel with bat and ball.”
