In everyone’s life, a little rain must fall, and that includes infielder Miguel Rojas of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
While the Chicago White Sox postponed a Sunday home game due to heavy rains in the Windy City, the Chicago Cubs went ahead with the rubber match of a three-game homestand against the presumptive World Series favorites.
The Cubs had little trouble dodging the raindrops, thumping the Dodgers 8-1 to take the series two games to one. However, Rojas — who committed a throwing error — complained heavily about “improper” field conditions before the team tucked tail and headed to Minneapolis for a three-game set against the Minnesota Twins.
Los Angeles Dodgers Defense Sloppy at Wrigley Field
The Los Angeles Dodgers committed several defensive miscues in the first inning that led to three Cubs runs. The Wrigley Field grounds crew applied Quick Dry solution to the field, but continuing rains made that ineffective. Rojas fired a cross-infield throw to first base that landed in a puddle by the bag and allowed another run to score.
In all, the Dodgers made three errors in the game — the Cubs made none — in the blowout that included a two-hour, 51-minute rain delay. While neither Rojas nor manager Dave Roberts blamed the wet conditions directly, the 11-year MLB veteran ranted to the media anyway, saying:
“I’m playing in a puddle of water. Everybody can see it. That’s not the best conditions. I slipped at home plate. Something right there could’ve happened, not just to me but to anybody on the team. Not just on our team. We’re talking about players. We’ve got to take care of each other, and I feel like sometimes just to get the game in, in five innings, it’s not the right way to do it.”
Los Angeles Dodgers Dried Out, and Still Leading NL West
In spite of the damp day on the north side of Chicago, and the series loss to the Cubs, the Los Angeles Dodgers still sit atop the National League West with the only winning record in the division.
The team landed in Minneapolis with an 8-4 record, three games better than the second-place San Diego Padres. The Friars ended the weekend with a 5-7 mark.
Sunnier skies await the Los Angeles Dodgers back at Chavez Ravine, where the team hosts the Padres in a three-game weekend series set to start Friday night.
