Los Angeles Chargers: Analyst Calls 2 Star Players “Overrated” At Their Position

The Los Angeles Chargers are coming off a nightmare season. However, things are looking up for the franchise. They landed former Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh, who has a knack for turning programs around quickly. The team shedded some of their veteran salaries and boosted their offense through the draft. One analyst is not impressed and called two players from the team, Justin Herbert and Joey Bosa, overrated at their position.

Alex Kay of Bleacher Report wrote an article detailing the NFL’s most overrated players at each position. The Los Angeles Chargers had two players named. Justin Herbert is making over $50 million this year and only has a 30-32 career record. He blew a 27-0 lead in a playoff game to the Jaguars and has not been the model of consistency. More of the overrated title comes from uncertainty about whether he will be able to reach his potential.

“It’s unclear whether Herbert will be able to reach his immense potential and deliver sustained playoff success in L.A.”

The case for Joey Bosa is a little easier. His production has suffered over the past few years due to injury. In big games, he is a non-factor and yet he is paid like one of the top edge rushers in the league. There were rumors the team was looking to trade him this offseason but a restructured deal kept him around.

Fair Or Unfair?

The criticism of the Los Angeles Chargers quarterback is a little unfair. Justin Herbert has not been the reason this team has failed to live up to expectations. While critics will point to the blown 27-0 lead, the playcalling was a huge factor. Herbert ran the plays that were called. His stats speak for themselves. He has completed 66.6 percent of his throws for 17,223 yards and 114 touchdowns against 42 interceptions.

The criticism for Joey Bosa is a little more warranted. While injuries are tough to overcome, even when he is on the field, he doesn’t feel like a factor. An aging Khalil Mack had more of an impact last year than Bosa. Even if the sack numbers aren’t there, a defensive edge can affect the game in other ways. The former Ohio State Buckeye consistently disappears in big moments.

The Los Angeles Chargers want to surprise some people this year. Now that they have a competent head coach in the locker room, the hope is they improve the product on the field.
