Liverpool vs. Brentford: Preview

liverpool

Arne Slot’s first competitive match at Anfield will take place on Sunday afternoon, as Liverpool host Brentford, who also won their season’s opening game. Liverpool defeated Ipswich Town 2-0 last weekend, while Brentford secured a 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace. Mohamed Salah scored again on the opening weekend, adding to his impressive record.

Liverpool’s match against Ipswich saw Slot facing another Premier League debutant, Kieran McKenna. He had a strong first half but saw his team falter as Liverpool came from behind with goals from Diogo Jota and Salah. Slot’s win was significant, ending a streak where no Liverpool manager had won their opening Premier League match since Gérard Houllier in 1998.

Now, Slot will experience the atmosphere at Anfield for the first time in the Premier League. Under Jürgen Klopp, Liverpool only lost one of their 19 home league matches last season, and they have not lost their first home game of the season since a defeat by West Ham United in 2015. Slot aims to be the first Liverpool manager to win their first two Premier League games, a feat only achieved by Graeme Souness in 1991 when the competition was still known as the First Division.

Brentford’s head coach, Thomas Frank, was considered a potential successor to Klopp, but he remained loyal to Brentford and saw his team emerge victorious against Crystal Palace. Despite Ivan Toney’s absence, Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa stepped up, with Wissa playing a key role in their win.

Brentford had a bit of luck with a disputed Eberechi Eze free kick that was disallowed, but Frank was thrilled with the win, especially against a London rival. The Bees will face a tough challenge at Anfield, where they have lost their last eight encounters with Liverpool and have not won there since 1937. Liverpool has an upper hand over Brentford when it comes to comparing the Head-to-Head statistics. Where Liverpool thinks to further increase the lead in the history for this particular fixture, Brighton will look up to upsetting the giants through their defensive display and counter-attacking style of playing.

Liverpool vs. Brentford: Team News & Starting-XI

Slot has some injury concerns, with Jarell Quansah doubtful after picking up a training injury. If Quansah is unavailable, Ibrahima Konaté is expected to partner Virgil van Dijk in defense. Liverpool is likely to field a similar lineup to their opening match, with Ryan Gravenberch continuing in a deeper midfield role.

Brentford will be without Rico Henry, Igor Thiago, Josh Dasilva, and Aaron Hickey due to injuries. Toney’s future remains uncertain, and with his potential absence, Wissa will lead the attack, aiming to make Premier League history with consecutive games scoring and assisting.

Liverpool possible starting lineup: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Konaté, Van Dijk, Robertson; Mac Allister, Gravenberch; Salah, Szoboszlai, Díaz; Jota

Brentford’s possible starting lineup: Flekken; Roerslev, Collins, Pinnock, Ajer; Norgaard, Janelt, Jensen; Mbeumo, Wissa, Schade
