Kansas City Royals Punch Playoff Ticket

The Kansas City Royals clinched a playoff spot on Friday night.

Even with a 3-0 loss last night to the Atlanta Braves, the Kansas City Royals qualified for the MLB Playoffs for the first time since 2015. Kansas City made the playoffs due to the Minnesota Twins also losing and officially being eliminated from playoff contention. This has been a spectacular season for the Kansas City Royals and an unexpected one as well. The ballclub set a franchise record with 106 losses last season, and expectations were not much higher heading into this season.

Instead, the team has completed one of the best turnarounds in league history and will be playing postseason baseball for the first time since they won the World Series in 2015. Kansas City hopes some of that postseason magic will be present this year. The Royals were seemingly a lock to make the MLB Playoffs until the team had multiple seven-game losing streaks over the past month. Kansas City hopes those woes are now behind them. How will the Kansas City Royals fare in the MLB Playoffs this year?

Kansas City Royals Season Summary

The Kansas City Royals(85-75) are in third place in the American League Central and only game behind their divisional foe, the Detroit Tigers for the second AL Wild Card spot. Detroit holds a slim one-game lead with two games remaining in the 2024 regular season. Kansas City’s offense has been one of their strengths this season. They are eighth in batting average, 21st in home runs, and 13th in runs scored. Kansas City Royals Shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. had an MVP-caliber season, but Aaron Judge will win the AL MVP this year due to another historic season.

Witt Jr. is leading the league in batting average, sixth in RBI, fifth in OBP, third in Slugging Percentage, and fourth in OPS. He finds himself near the top of various categories with Judge, Juan Soto, and Shohei Ohtani. Not bad company to find oneself if. The pitching staff of the Kansas City Royals has also been exemplary this season. They are eighth in ERA, 16th in opposing batting average, and 13th in WHIP. The pitching staff is led by Starting Pitcher Seth Lugo who is third in the league in wins, 10th in ERA, and 14th in WHIP. Starting Pitcher Cole Ragans is also 12th in the league in ERA and third in strikeouts.

Kansas City’s Upcoming Schedule

Even with a playoff spot officially locked up, the Kansas City Royals have much to play for over the season’s final two games. The team wants to enter the postseason playing well, and also try to overtake the Tigers for the second wild card spot. Kansas City owns the head-to-head tiebreaker over Detroit after going 7-3 against them this season.

Kansas City’s final two games are against an Atlanta Braves team that is fighting for a wild card spot. Atlanta is locked in a three-way tie with the Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Mets for the final two wild card spots. The Royals will need to defeat a desperate Braves team to increase their playoff seeding this weekend.
