JJ Redick Already Hunting for LA’s New Coaching Staff for the 2024-25 Season

Lakers Summer League California Classic Game Golden State Warriors vs. Los Angeles Lakers

With the dismissal of Darvin Ham, the Lakers desire someone who can make impacts and influence in the locker room. Thus, despite not having any coaching or assistant coaching experience, the Lakers envision JJ Redick as a Pat Riley reincarnation.

Also, as LeBron James gets older and closer to retiring, the Los Angeles Lakers aim to utilize his greatness to land another NBA Championship title for the franchise. Now that the Lakers are in a crucial rebuilding phase this offseason, can JJ Redick be up to the task?

JJ Redick Coaching Staff Outlook

Redick is still top of the list for the LA Lakers and there isn’t any coaching staff on the team due to dismissal. Thus, these are some potential assistant coaches that could land at Los Angeles. According to Dan Woike, one of them might make up Redick’s coaching staff, if not more.

  • Scott Brooks, the former head coach of the Washington Wizards
  • Sam Cassel, the current assistant coach at Boston Celtics
  • Jared Dudley, the current assistant coach at Dallas Mavericks
  • Rajon Rondo, a Lakers guard who won the 2020 NBA Championship with the Lakers
  • Greg St. Jean, the former assistant coach of the LA Lakers who has worked with Jason Kidd at Mavericks
  • Frank Vogel, the former Phoenix coach

JJ Redick’s Possible Impact In Los Angeles Lakers

Since the Lakers had their eye on JJ Redick, the odds of him being the next Lakers’ head coach, on paper, was a minus – which means he might not land the job. However, sentiments came out rolling that Redick will be the next head coach because he has a good relationship with the four-time NBA Champion, LeBron James, which is a crucial factor in helping Redick command authority in the locker room. LeBron James and JJ Redick did a podcast together which made people think the four-time MVP had a hand in influencing the Lakers to desire Redick more, however, LeBron denies having a hand in searching for a coach for the Lakers. This isn’t the only instant LeBron James’ presence in a place influenced the Lakers’ offseason decision.

Los Angeles Lakers Outlook With JJ Redick

Los Angeles Lakers dream with JJ Redick

The Lakers are desperate to claim the NBA Championship Title this coming 2024-25 season, therefore, a cordial relationship between their future head coach and team leader could be a factor that makes Redick the obvious option. Further, part of the reason the Lakers sacked Darvin Ham was because of the gap that separated the infamous Lakers small forward from the former head coach and team.

Despite JJ Redick’s lack of coaching experience, he is an NBA Veteran shooting guard who played for the Orlando Magic, Milwaukee Bucks, Philadelphia 76ers Orleans Pelicans, Dallas Mavericks, and Los Angeles Clippers from 2006 to 2021. He retired at the age of 37 from playing basketball and since then has been an interesting media personality. With this experience as a basketball player, Redick’s analytic basketball IQ could help groom up-and-coming stars at the Lakers.

What’s At Stake?

The Lakers looking to sign Reidck as their new head coach is a heavy risk to both the franchise and Redick’s reputation because the last head coach who had more tenure at the Lakers was Phil Jackson (2006-11). Other coaches that came after him didn’t last for more than two years if they could provide results. Redick, on the other hand, has his reputation on the line because the Lakers are a huge franchise that doesn’t take a short-term disservice as a result.

The Los Angeles Lakers’ outlook with JJ Redick is short and long-term.  Short term in terms of ensuring LeBron James adds another ring to his catalog and as a young coach builds a sustainable winning culture for the franchise. Therefore, it would be appropriate to pair Redick with an experienced coach or coach assistant, if not the Lakers would stand a chance of losing their hope for the NBA Champion.
