Jannik Sinner Keeps Momentum With Dominant US Open Win

2024 US Open

Jannik Sinner was determined to exert his dominance at the US Open. The world No. 1 refused to join Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic who both crashed out earlier. Sinner has kept his great momentum after he breezed past Australian Christopher O’Connell 6-1 6-4 6-2.

It might be a lot easier for Sinner to clinch his first winning title at the US Open after the other two favorites had their early flight home. The Italian will face the American Tommy Paul in the next round. The home favorite won a four-set battle against Gabriel Diallo.

Witnessing the favorites crash out two days in a row before him has made Jannik Sinner raise his new weapon at the US Open. He has shown that he refused to become the third big-name casualty at the US Open in three days. Jannik Sinner still had his chance to add another Grand Slam to his collection at Flushing Meadows.

Jannik Sinner knows how tennis can be really unpredictable, just like the early loss of Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic. “Whenever you drop a little bit of your level, if it’s mental, if it’s tennis-wise or physical, at the end it has a huge impact on the result,” he said. Jannik Sinner saw that both opponents who Alcaraz and Djokovic lost against had played some incredible tennis.

Sinner stated that he made his calculations to make him better on court. “I just watch on my side what I have to do that I guess I have also done in the last period of time, and then we will see what I can do. That’s it,” he said.

Sinner Has Great Opportunity To Win US Open

With the stunning early exits by No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz and No. 2 seed Novak Djokovic on back-to-back days, the men’s draw has been turned upside down. It leaves a final 16 with only one former US Open champion Daniil Medvedev and one other Grand Slam champion Jannik Sinner. If Medvedev and Sinner are on track to move forward, they will meet in the quarterfinals.

Jannik Sinner is more likely to be a strong favorite to win his first US Open and sweep the two hard court Grand Slams this year. After dropping the first set of the tournament against Mackenzie McDonalds, the 23-year-old Italian has been pretty much untouchable. But we can’t put aside the possibilities of the 2021 US Open champion, Daniil Medvedev. He loves Flushing Meadows. Medvedev has made three of the last five US Open finals and played dominant tennis when he rolled to the title in 2021.

It has been a challenge for Jannik Sinner over the last year. Medvedev lost to Sinner in this year’s Australian Open final. but the Russian managed to turn the table in the Wimbledon quarterfinals, playing a tremendous match to win in five sets.

Other Winners Arise Beside Jannik Sinner

There are at least two American favorites to win the US Open this time, Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe. We can also add Tommy Paul to the list if he can knock out Jannik Sinner in the Round of 16. That would mean that the 27-year-old American would possibly face Daniil Medvedev at the quarters.

Another American who might also have a chance to shine is Brandon Nakashima. He had an amazing tournament so far after upsetting Lorenzo Musetti in the third round. Another test for him would be the No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev in the Round of 16.

Other top players also might have their chance to shine at Flushing Meadows this year. They include Alexander Zverev, Casper Ruud, Andrey Rublev, Jack Draper, Alexei Popyrin, Alex de Minaur, Grigor Dimitrov, Jordan Thomson, Thomas Machac, and Nuno Borges. With a week left in the 2024 US Open, the men’s draw is wide open.
