Coming off their first loss of the season a couple of weeks ago at the hands of the Penn State Nittany Lions, the Illinois Fighting Illini will be looking to bounce back against Purdue this weekend. The Illini are no longer undefeated but will try to get back in the win column against a struggling Boilermaker team. Being given an off week to regroup after the road loss, the Illini look to move forward with the rest of their season, trying to stay ranked in the top 25.
Seeing as they have been given a bye week after the big game in Happy Valley, Illinois has had plenty of time to regroup from a health perspective and be at full-go for the Boilermakers, a team they should have no trouble defeating. There are still some lingering injuries to deal with for Coach Bret Bielema’s crew and some opportunities to maybe get some guys in for game snaps that might not have been candidates if the Illinois Fighting Illini had a different opponent this week.
Banged Up TE Room
The tight end position has been the only constant source of concern for injury for the Illinois Fighting Illini this season. They had to deal with a preseason injury to Cole Rusk that ended his 2024 campaign before it even started. During non-conference play, Carson Goda was in and out of the lineup dealing with a hamstring injury, and then Henry Boyer was sidelined at the start of Big Ten play.
The off week seems to have solved many of those issues. Henry Boyer is participating in practice with no limitations and is at “full strength” for Saturday afternoon in his role behind Tanner Arkin at the end spot according to Bielema. When asked about Boyer Coach Bielema said, “He had a really big week last week. He’s a big body that can run and does some really good things for us.” The head coach of the Illinois Fighting Illini labored about the weakness of the tight end position last year and how he’s glad the group is getting back to full strength this season to provide versatility in personnel packages.
Goda continues to deal with his hamstring injury but was helped immensely by the bye week and according to Coach Bielema, he’s made some great strides over recent weeks. While his availability for Saturday is unclear, all signs are that he is heading in the right direction in terms of his recovery.
Early Season Health
Aside from the tight end position, there are no areas of note for injury concerns with this Illinois Fighting Illini team. They suffered three season-ending injuries in fall camp that have been reported and those players are all using a medical red shirt. Running Back Aidan Laughery was a question mark heading into the game against Penn State but after he was a full participant, he is off the injury report ahead of the game against Purdue.
At full strength through five games, the season is shaping up to be a healthy one for the Illinois Fighting Illini. Things could change on a dime but health hasn’t been an issue for the 24th-ranked Illinois Fighting Illini. They will try to get out of their Saturday afternoon matchup against a struggling Purdue Boilermaker team with a win and a clean bill of health.
