Houston Texans: 3 Keys To Victory Against the New York Jets

The Houston Texans prepare to face the New York Jets tomorrow night.

Given the way the New York Jets have been playing, many fans have probably penciled this game in as a win for the Houston Texans already. This game couldn’t come at a worse time for the Houston franchise, however. Not only does Nico Collins have one more week left on Injured Reserve, but Stefon Diggs has an ACL injury that will keep him sidelined for the rest of the season. The Houston Texans are going to need to dig deep to pull out a win here.

Stack The Box On Defense

By any standard, Running Back Breece Hall has failed to live up to the huge expectations placed on him this season. Hall has only rushed for over 100 yards once this season. If he gets going against Houston, though, it will make it much easier for Quarterback Aaron Rodgers to make simple throws to win the game.

On the other hand, it can be really easy to make the Jets one-dimensional by taking away their running game. This is why they should stack the box, or keep seven or more guys within the tackles. If Rodgers fakes a run and drops back to pass, his offensive line has not done a good job of blocking for him this season, so there is a good chance the Houston Texans pass rushers can close the distance and get Rodgers off his feet.

Get Tank Dell the Ball

Seeing as the Houston Texans took two huge injuries to their wide receivers, the Jets will try to take the run game away from Houston. It’s not easy to stop Joe Mixon, but the Jets know how much worse their passing game will be without Diggs or Collins.

This is where Tank Dell can turn this season around for him while giving the Houston Texans a win. If Stroud can get him the ball in the air, that will open up the running game more for Mixon. It also stops the Texans from being one-dimensional themselves. Dell is still capable of going for those spectacular 100-yard games, he just needs to prove it.

Double Davante Adams

The most basic observation one could make about the Jets this season is that Rodgers doesn’t have the same rapport with the new receivers as he does with the ones he brought over from Green Bay. Many thought before the season that Rodgers and Garrett Wilson would be one of the best pass connections in the game, but that has yet to materialize.

That being the case, Rodgers might just fall into old habits and try to force the ball into Davante Adams’ hands whenever possible. Here is where the Houston Texans’ secondary can shine. They will likely have Adams covered with Derek Stingley Jr. or Kamari Lassiter all game. If they can also give them some safety help, it would force Rodgers to look for those secondary options with which he does not have the same chemistry.

Final Thoughts

The Houston Texans are one of the AFC’s best teams, but the team is injury-riddled heading into tomorrow’s road game against the New York Jets. Even though New York has been disappointing so far this season, their roster of full of talent, and can upset a Texans team if they take the opponent lightly.
