Houston Astros Pitching Staff Off To Tremendous Start

Houston Astros

The Houston Astros pitching staff has had a historic first 13 games of the regular season. They are limiting opposing hitters to a .182 average. That is the lowest batting average allowed through 13 games of a season by an MLB team since the 1981 Oakland A’s. Oakland held the opposition to a .176 batting average.

Even though Houston’s pitching staff has off to a historic start it has not led to success on the diamond. They are a mediocre 6-7 to start the year. Will the Houston Astros be able to get on track sooner rather than later?

Houston Astros Season Summary

The Astros have been hampered by its offense this year. They are 20th in batting average, 22nd in home runs, and 17th in runs scored. Second Baseman Jose Altuve is 15th in batting average, but the rest of the lineup has not held up its end of the bargain. They scored a season-high 14 runs on Friday against the Los Angeles Angels. Houston hopes that is a sign of things to come.

Houston’s pitching staff, as expected, has been one of the league’s best. They are 18th in ERA, second in WHIP, and tied for the league lead in strikeouts. Their pitching staff has been led by Starting Pitchers Framber Valdez and Hunter Brown. Valdez is top 10 in strikeouts and Brown is ninth in WHIP.

Final Thoughts

Houston will play the middle game of their three-game set tonight against the Angels. The Astros will need to lean on their pitching staff until their offense can catch up and begin producing at a solid level. The Houston Astros have a star-studded lineup that should be playing much better.
