Houston Astros Finding Form During Critical 2024 Season

Kyle Tucker, Houston Astros

The Houston Astros have been the hottest team in Major League Baseball over the last week and a half. They have won 10 of their last 11 games to shoot up the standings. Their winning streak started on June 19 against the Chicago White Sox. During this winning streak, the Houston Astros won seven games in a row including series sweeps over the Baltimore Orioles and Colorado Rockies. Houston also took two of three games over the weekend against the streaking New York Mets.

They won 3-1 last night in the first game of their series against the Toronto Blue Jays to get their July off to a winning start. Houston has outscored their opponent 72-39 over their last 11 games. They have also scored seven runs or more in five of their last 11 ball games. Will the Houston Astros be able to keep up their winning ways?

Houston Astros Season Summary

Houston(43-41) is in second place in the American League West and is three games back of the third and final AL Wild Card spot. Their offense is one of the league’s best. They lead the league in batting average, are fifth in home runs, and 12th in runs scored. Their offense is led by Second Baseman Jose Altuve, Right Fielder Kyle Tucker, and Left Fielder Yordan Alvarez.

Altuve is tenth in the league in batting average, Tucker is 10th in home runs and sixth in OPS, and Alvarez is top 20 in batting average, home runs, and OPS. Tucker has been sidelined for nearly a month with a shin injury, and his return to the diamond is still up in the air. He will provide a boost to the Houston Astros lineup whenever he does return.

The pitching staff of the Houston Astros has been the weaker part of their team this season. They are 17th in ERA, 15th in strikeouts, and 10th in opposing batting average. Starting Pitcher Ronel Blanco has had a standout 2024 campaign. He is 8-3 this season with an ERA of 2.49. He is sixth in the league in ERA and 12th in WHIP. Astros Relief Pitcher Bryan Abreu is fifth in the league with 18 holds.

Astros Upcoming Schedule

The Houston Astros play the second game of their four-game set on the road tonight against the Toronto Blue Jays. They head to Minnesota where they take on the Minnesota Twins for a three-game series beginning on Friday. This will be a critical week of games as both Toronto and Minnesota are near the Astros in the standings. Houston is looking to keep playing the best of any team in baseball and climb further up the American League standings.

Houston is aiming for their eighth straight trip to the MLB Playoffs as they have been one of the league’s most consistent teams over the last decade. The Astros offense will need to continue playing well as the pitching staff hopes to find its footing in the second half of the regular season.

A red-hot Astros team is not something the rest of the league is excited about. They have the championship pedigree to strike fear in the 29 other teams.
