Green Bay Packers Quarterback Fighting For Job

Green Bay Packers

The Green Bay Packers will start training camp this week and it is going to be a very intriguing training camp. This is a football team that will have high expectations entering the 2024 season. Green Bay finished with a 9-8 record a season ago. The Packers started last season 2-5 and many thought they were going to miss the playoffs at that point. Quarterback Jordan Love proved himself toward the end of last season. With Love proving himself, he should be getting a new contract sooner rather than later.

There will be no questions about the starting quarterback entering the 2024 season. The Green Bay Packers will need to figure out who will be the backup quarterback for Love. Will it be either rookie Michael Pratt or second-year player Sean Clifford? Clifford was the backup for Green Bay last season. Pratt was a seventh-round selection from Tulane in the 2024 NFL Draft. Many thought that Michael Pratt was going to be drafted earlier in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Selecting Pratt was a huge steal for the Green Bay Packers even though he is not going to be the starting quarterback. Over the years, the Green Bay Packers had different backup quarterbacks for Aaron Rodgers, who went onto different teams after that. It will be very important for Green Bay this season to get the backup quarterback position right. Who will end up winning the job in training camp?

Sean Clifford Is Fighting For His Job In Training Camp

Clifford is fighting for his job in training camp to be the backup quarterback to Jordan Love. Sean Clifford will battle it out with Michael Pratt. According to Brian Sampson of dairylandexpress.com, he believes that Sean Clifford is one of eight players on the Green Bay Packers roster who are playing for their jobs in training camp. Sampson said about Clifford:

“The Packers took a risk last season by using rookie fifth-round pick Sean Clifford as Jordan Love’s primary backup. The risk paid off despite neither player having significant playing experience in the NFL, as both guys left 2024 with varying levels of promise in their careers.

“As Love looks to continue his trajectory as a top quarterback in the NFL, Clifford proved he can become a reliable backup at the next level. That may seem like a low bar, but it is somewhat surprising considering most draft analysts thought he was a seventh-round prospect or even an undrafted free agent.

“Despite a positively surprising season, Clifford must re-establish himself on the Packers’ roster. Green Bay drafted Michael Pratt in the seventh round, a record-setting quarterback out of Tulane. Pratt has all of the skills to challenge Clifford to get the starting spot behind Love on the depth chart. Clifford can’t afford to rest on his laurels.”

How Will The Green Bay Packers Make This Decision?

One of the things that will go into consideration during this battle is the age of the quarterbacks. Sean Clifford is 26 years old and Michael Pratt is only 22 years old. Clifford may not have much upside remaining with the Green Bay Packers. Pratt has way more upside. If Jordan Love were to get hurt, the fans would trust Pratt more than Clifford.

At one point last season, the Green Bay Packers fanbase wanted Jordan Love benched for Sean Clifford, but that was never going to happen. Green Bay let Love go through the growing pains and it was the right move for them. Because of Love staying as the starting quarterback, he has a chance to take them to great heights this season. Sean Clifford for now is the number two quarterback on the roster, but he struggled during offseason workouts. Michael Pratt outperformed him then and can do so again in training camp.
