Gophers Stun 11th Ranked Trojans

Gophers
The Minnesota Gophers stunned the 11th-ranked USC Trojans tonight, 24-17, at Huntington Bank Stadium. And they did it dramatically, scoring on a fourth and one play that was originally ruled a stop. The fans poured onto the field in what was P.J. Fleck’s biggest victory as a Gophers coach. This was an all-around effort full of clutch defensive plays and dramatic offensive performances.

Trojans Are on the Board

The game started slowly as both defenses were being stingy early. The Gophers finally broke through with a Dragan Kesich 32-yard field goal. The kick was set up by some hard-earned rushing yards by Marcus Major and Darius Taylor, who had an overdue 2024 coming-out party.

The Trojans answered back halfway through the second quarter on a three-yard Miller Moss-to-Duce Robinson touchdown reception. The Gopher’s defense was fed a steady diet of Woody Marks on the drive. The USC back rushed six times on the drive for 43 yards and added six yards on one reception.

Gophers Answer Back

The Gophers then put together a 15-play, 75-yard drive, highlighted by a brilliant 40-yard run by Taylor up the middle. At the end of the play, a nine-yard face mask penalty was tacked on, bringing the ball down to the USC nine-yard line. Later in the drive, Brosmer sneaked it in from a yard out to put the Gophers in front 10-7.

After an Ethan Robinson fumble recovery, Minnesota had a chance to add to its lead with 1:51 left before halftime. But the Gophers played it conservatively, and the Trojans capitalized on a Taylor fumble to start their own drive on their 49-yard line with 1:27 left on the clock. The big play was a pass reception by Marks that covered 17 yards. As the clock ran out, Michael Lantz nailed a 54-yard field goal to tie the game at 10-10.

USC Draws First Blood in Second Half

After a Gopher punt, the Trojans marched down the field in classic USC fashion. Mixing some Marks’ runs with short passes to his wide receivers, Moss moved his team down the field on a 12-play, 91-yard drive that ate up 7:03 of the clock. It ended when Marks punched it up the middle for a Trojan touchdown and a seven-point lead.
On their next possession, the Gophers put together a nice drive as the quarter flipped, but it stalled out at the USC 40-yard line. However, the wheels of momentum started turning with the very next play.

Minnesota Takes Over

Gophers punter Mark Crawford pinned the Trojans down at their four-yard line, but the Moss and Marks show went right back at it until USC was faced with a third and four at the Minnesota 35-yard line. Moss dropped back to pass, but suddenly, Minnesota defensive end Jah Joyner exploded in from the left side, hitting Moss while also deflecting a pass that ended up nicely in the hands of linebacker Devin Williams. That was all the stimulus Minnesota would need to take the game over.

From there, Taylor took his cue and, after a fake handoff, caught a pass from Brosmer that he turned into a 20-yard gain and a Minnesota first down. On the next play, he started left and then cut back to the right on a brilliant maneuver, resulting in a 19-yard ramble down to the USC 24-yard line. A pass interference call moved the sticks to the Trojan 10-yard line. Brosmer, on the next play, executed a fake handoff only to scoot around the right for his second rushing touchdown of the night. The game was knotted at 17, with 7:08 left on the clock.

Gophers Take It Home

The Gopher defense stopped the Trojans on the ensuing drive mainly due to a nine-yard sack by Joyner. Confidence seemed to be brimming from the Gophers as they proceeded on a 75-yard 12-play drive. Brosmer had two intermediate-level completions to Le’Meke Brockington and Daniel Jackson that netted 38 yards and kept the drive rolling. A series of runs brought Minnesota to a fourth-and-one situation with 59 ticks left on the clock.
Everyone in the stadium assumed coach Fleck would kick the field goal and leave the rest up to his defense. But to the surprise of most folks in attendance, he instead called a quarterback sneak that the officials initially called no touchdown. On review, the ball had indeed broken the plain, giving the Gophers a seven-point lead with 56 seconds left in the game.
Undaunted, Moss led his team down the field with a spirited drive down to the Minnesota 28-yard line, But on the very next play, the USC signal caller went for all the marbles, throwing a deep pass to the middle of the end zone. But in dramatic fashion, super freshman Koi Perich intercepted the pass, terminating the Trojans’ final chance. The gun sounded, and Minnesota had earned a hard-fought 24-17 win.  Huntington Bank Stadium erupted as joyous fans rushed the field, barely allowing the players to leave. The celebration lasted for the better part of an hour.

After the game, coach Fleck talked about the terrific game that his entire defense played. “I thought we covered really well. Covered really well. It was tight coverage. We were knocking the ball out. And not only that, I thought we hit them. You caught a ball and how many times did a kid go head over heels?”

The Gophers hit the road next weekend to play a struggling UCLA Bruins team. And the USC Trojans host the 7th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions in an epic Big Ten battle.
