Golden State Warriors Desperately Trying to Rebuild Around Steph Curry

Steph Curry

The Golden State Warriors have dominated over the past ten years, forming the first dynasty since the early 2000s. Now, they find themselves in a very interesting predicament, as we are reaching the final three years of Stephen Curry’s illustrious career. The First domino to fall was last year. The architect of the dynasty, Bob Meyers, stepped down as Warriors GM to take a job at ESPN as an analyst. This was interesting timing for Meyers, knowing there were some very tough decisions to make coming up with Klay Thomson’s contract situation.

With Klay Thompson coming off of two major injuries, it was hard to believe they could pay him the full max, especially with all the new cap rules and penalties that team owners could face, preventing them from spending over the salary cap into the luxury tax.  Ultimately, the inevitable happened, and Klay accepted a deal to join Luka Doncic, Kyrie Irving, and the Dallas Mavericks on a 3-year deal. So that leaves the question, “What’s next for Steph and the Warriors.”

Many Changes to the Golden State Warriors Roster

With those additions, the Golden State Warriors feel they have replaced Klay Thompson’s production and added even more depth to a team that already had quite a bit of depth last season. The Warriors were also in the mix for signing Paul George before he landed in Philadelphia with the 76ers, but to do so would have required the Clippers to cooperate in a sign-and-trade to make the deal work.

The Clippers, however, were not willing to help the Golden State Warriors, as the Warriors have gotten the best of the Clippers over the better part of a decade. Not to mention, the two teams are in the same Conference and division. Next, the Warriors quickly pivoted to trade talks and were in extensive talks with the Utah Jazz in hopes of acquiring all-star forward Lauri Markkanen.

If you know anything about Jazz general manager Danny Ainge, former Boston Celtics player and GM, acquiring Lauri would never be easy. As expected, Ainge was asking for all of the Warrior’s young core, the team’s remaining first-round picks, and pick swaps. The deal finally ended up not getting done. The Jazz were just asking for too much, as the Warriors weren’t willing to trade both young up-and-coming players, Jonathan Kuminga and Brandin Podziemski.

Should the Warriors Hold Off on Making More Changes

As urgently as the Golden State Warriors are looking to recruit another star around Steph Curry and Draymond Green, rather than taking apart the depth and young core, which provides a lot of energy and athleticism, it would make much more sense to wait until the trade deadline. More teams will be willing to sell at the deadline, and players will become available.

Another young player the Golden State Warriors acquired in last year’s draft was Center Trayce Jackson—Davis from the University of Indiana. Trayce looks to fit another key role on the team as a rim defender on defense and a lob threat on offense who can effectively play in the pick-and-roll.

Will Curry Eventually Move on From the Team

The Golden State Warriors are in an interesting position regarding wanting to build a contender without mortgaging too much of their future. When asked by the media if he would ever consider playing for another franchise, Steph Curry said, “I never envisioned playing for another team, but with that being said, I want to win at all costs. There’s a lot of time and energy invested into this stuff, so I want to be in a situation where winning is the most important thing.” There is no way anyone could see #30 in another uniform, but it will remain to be seen.
