Tyler Glasnow Suffers Setback Before Simulated Game

Glasnow

A tale as old as time for the Los Angeles Dodgers this season. Yet another misfortune has plagued their pitching staff, leading to uncertainty and dismay among the organization. This time, their nightmares continue as one of their promising starting pitchers suffers a “setback” before the start of his simulated game.

Tyler Glasnow has become an asset to the Dodgers starting rotation. His awaited return has been anticipated for almost a month now. With the pitching staff causing much concern this season, his presence on the mound is more than imperative to the success of the Dodgers. Will this setback impair Glasnow from returning to the mound in 2024?

Glasnow’s Setback to Return

On Friday, Sept. 13, Glasnow was set to make a rehab appearance in a simulated game. According to Los Angeles Dodgers manager, Dave Roberts, Glasnow experienced discomfort in his elbow while warming up and could not go through with the game. This complication will affect his return to the mound in one way or another, though there is not much information released on the state of his injury.

Roberts also mentioned that the discomfort he was feeling resided in the same part of his right elbow that sent him to the injured list in the first place. The timeline for his return is unclear as of now, impacting the likelihood of pitching this season.

Though the outlook may seem grim, the results of the scans were reported to be “promising”, according to Roberts. He did not release any further details on the promising aspects of the scans so his statement has been up to speculation.

A Glance at Glasnow’s Career

Glasnow has been elite throughout his time with the Dodgers. This year, his ERA is at 3.49 while registering 168 strikeouts in just 134 innings pitched. In that time, he allowed only 35 walks and has a record of 9-6.

His career began in 2016 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 2018, he made his way to the Tampa Bay Rays where he solidified his place as an elite competitor. He made his first All-Star team this year with Los Angeles. After signing a five-year contract with the Dodgers, the 31-year-old will continue to make a huge impact on Los Angeles for years to come.

What This Means for the Dodgers

The addition of Glasnow to the starting rotation seemed like a saving grace among the inconsistent rotation that’s been handling the brunt of the innings. With the length of his absence becoming prolonged, the postseason rotation is up in the air as it stands.

The two guaranteed postseason starters as of now for Los Angeles are Jack Flaherty and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Flaherty being picked up at the trade deadline has been even more necessary than anticipated. With his pitch arsenal and quality starts, he stands a good chance at being a game-one starter.

Yamamoto just made his return to the big leagues in the series versus the Chicago Cubs. He had a quality return and is working to build up his innings and go deeper into games as the season continues. He will likely sit in the game-two slot. The remainder of the rotation raises many questions for the Dodgers. Bobby Miller and Walker Buehler have both struggled immensely this year, leaving their position in the rotation up for debate. The Dodgers need to find consistency in their rotation or else their success in the playoffs will be short-lived.
