Gareth Southgate is the man in charge when it comes to the England national team, preparing the squad list of who is going to take on the other countries during international tournaments.
The selection process is hard, as he has to take into account English players in the Premier League, Championship, and other countries around the world, such as top leagues like Ligue 1, La Liga, and the Bundesliga.
His job is hard, there is no doubt about it. But he just made a huge statement a few hours ago by leaving off three key players on the England squad list for the upcoming Euro 2024 tournament. Did he make the right call? Only time will tell. But, we can tell you this much – this is a huge surprise.
Southgate Left Off Three Big Surprises
A wrap-up of what Gareth Southgate said shortly after his 26-man #EURO2024 squad was confirmed 👇

Gareth Southgate turned some heads with his latest squad announcement. There are players on the England team who make it camp after camp, whether they have played well for their club or not. And Southgate has frequently received flack that he is not choosing people based on their current form, but based on reputation.
And that has stopped with their recent list that just emerged from the head of the England team.
Southgate left off Rashford in the first draft of the squad list for the upcoming international tournament. The Manchester United man has been out of form for the entire season, getting limited minutes and acting lackluster during games.
Now, Southgate has left off Jack Grealish, Harry Maguire, James Maddison, and Raheem Sterling.
Grealish didn’t get numerous minutes for Manchester City this year, so he had less opportunity to prove himself to the England squad compared to wingers who got regular minutes. And with Southgate axing Rashford as well, it seems as though the head coach felt like the left-hand side of the team needed a change.
Plus, leaving James Maddison off the list is a harsh call. He has been a regular fixture in the England squad during qualifying and received tons of time under Southgate. But, the manager made a tough call and included other attacking midfielders instead.
Another surprising omission was Harry Maguire, the England center-back who has consistently received flack for poor performances, egregious errors, and mistake after mistake in club and country games. It seems as though the coach has finally listened to the pundits and the fans by leaving Harry Maguire off the list.
Finally, Sterling could be out of the England squad for good. The now-Chelsea forward used to play for Manchester City and moved to the Blues to get more playing time. Despite more time, he doesn’t seem to have found the form that he had as a youthful and young striker at City.
Gareth Southgate’s Squad
Looking At Suothgate’s squad for the upcoming Euro 2024, there are a few key players that stand out on the list.
Foden, the Premier League Player of the Season who dressed for Manchester City this past year, is going to be a big-time player for the team. He will probably be the starting left wing for England who face off against Germany in their first game.
Other options on the left-hand side that will play a big part in England’s success this summer include Eze, an energetic winger and striker who plays for Crystal Palace, and Luke Shaw, a super-fast and fit fullback who can make the game more attacking=minded.
