Francesco Bagnaia’s Emilia Romagna Race Ends in Disappointment

Francesco Bagnaia

Francesco Bagnaia arrived in Emilia Romagna with the confidence to claim a second consecutive win on Italian soil after triumphing in the Sprint. This would not only mean the historic 100th Grand Prix victory for Ducati. It boosted him back to the top of the MotoGP rankings and ahead of its main competitor, Jorge Martin. However, what was expected to be a perfect race turned out to be a very tough race as Bagnaia struggled throughout before a disappointing end.

Francesco Bagnaia Has Early Challenges

However, even by the flag, it was tough for Francesco Bagnaia to get his pace going off the line starting from the pole. He was a loser to Jorge Martin in the holeshot and failed to hold him off going into the first turn. However, the reigning double world champion quickly regained his position, passing Martin at Turn 2, assuring fans that he was fully in control and capable of executing his race strategy.

Francesco Bagnaia seemed to struggle at certain points of the track as the rear of the bike wells in corners during acceleration. Although only Martin was in a similar league to him over the three days, several riders formed a chasing group behind him, probably thinking that the world champion was beatable.

Later on lap 4, Martin and Enea Bastianini overtook Francesco Bagnaia, leaving him in third place. He started the race with some laps in a 1m 32s bracket before settling down and clocking a new lap record of 1m 30.877s in the middle of the race.

A Disastrous Finish

Just when it seemed that Francesco Bagnaia could reel in the leaders, disaster struck with seven laps remaining. He lost the front of his bike while braking for Turn 8, leading to his seventh DNF of the season. The home crowd held its breath when he skidded off the track, effectively ruling out a good finish. Francesco Bagnaia expressed his frustration with tire issues, stating that

“I was braking 18 or 20 meters earlier than on my fastest lap. I lost the front without any lean angle. It’s impossible to lose the front like this in dry conditions.”

He complained that in three races this time it was the second occasion that tire issues affected his performance. However, he has a gap of 24 points between him and his rival, Jorge Martin, as the riders launched into the flyaway triple header in Indonesia next weekend.

Final Thoughts

As fans saw from Francesco Bagnaia’s race in the Emilia Romagna event, motorsport can be very unpredictable. Despite a clean start and fast lap times, tire troubles used to thwart his shot at winning a race, not to mention a freak accident. With the flyaway rounds coming up and starting in Indonesia, he did not waver, as he understands there is always certain luck in making it to the top. Despite his temporary misfortune, he certainly remains highly determined and surrounds himself with a great team so that he will be able to return to the ranks of the race favorites in the next competitions.
