On the June 17th, 2024, edition of Monday Night Raw, a former 3 time WWE World Champion walked out of the company as he announced that he was quitting.
Drew McIntyre had recently been taking loss after loss mostly due to interference from his rival, CM Punk. This happened once again as CM Punk cost Drew another world title match, this time in his hometown.
On this show, it seemed like Drew finally had enough, and decided to walk out of the company,
Drew McIntyre’s Promo on Raw
In a segment on last night’s show, Drew McIntyre came out after losing his World Heavyweight Championship match against Damian Priest at Clash at the Castle. He immediately grabbed a mic and entered the ring, while the entire crowd was chanting CM Punk.
He was about to cut a promo on Punk, but it seemed clear that there was not much more for Drew to say after what happened in Scotland. So instead, he immediately transitioned into a promo where he stated he was walking out of the company, as he said “Screw this company, I quit.”
He then exited the ring and was walking out of the arena, Adam Pearce came out and tried to convince McIntyre to stay but he kept on walking to the backstage area. He kept on telling Pearce that he was done, making it clear that nothing would change his decision.
A clip leaked on social media after the segment showed Triple H trying to tell Drew to not leave the company but it seemed that Drew had made up his mind. The next few weeks might show segments of both Pearce and Hunter trying to bring Drew back to the WWE.
CM Punk Has Ruined Drew McIntyre
In recent months, it seems like every time Drew McIntyre has a chance for success, CM Punk comes out and ruins it. This was first seen at WrestleMania 40, where CM Punk attacked Drew McIntyre after he won the World Heavyweight Championship. In the leadup to WrestleMania, Drew McIntyre, CM Punk, and World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins were all in a feud with each other.
This led to the injured Punk being the special guest commentator for their match at the PLE. At WrestleMania, Drew McIntyre won the title but was attacked by CM Punk. This allowed for the Money in the Bank holder Damian Priest to run out to the ring and cash in his contract, which he did successfully. Punk cost McIntyre the title just 5 minutes after he had won it.
It didn’t end there, as the next night on Raw, Drew had the opportunity to win a #1 contenders match which would give him a world title shot at Backlash, but Punk interfered in the match and cost Drew once again. In the next few weeks, every time CM Punk was on television, he and Drew would have a segment that would continue to enhance their rivalry.
At Clash at the Castle in Drew’s hometown of Scotland, he had the opportunity again to beat Priest for the World Heavyweight Championship. He had Damian pinned for over 10 seconds while the referee was down, and when a new ref came out he intentionally stopped his count at 2.
The camera then turned to reveal CM Punk as the new referee who stepped into the match. Drew then confronted Punk but Punk hit him with a low blow which cost McIntyre the championship match. This frustration that’s built up in recent months has finally led to Drew walking out of the WWE as he couldn’t deal with Punk’s antics anymore.
Did McIntyre Quit the WWE?
Despite the WWE trying to make it look like Drew McIntyre legitimately walked out of the company, the reality of this segment was that it was made to advance the storyline between McIntyre and Punk.
This has been done multiple times in the WWE before, most recently with Jey Uso after he “quit” the company in August 2023. Drew McIntyre didn’t truly leave the WWE and will probably be back before SummerSlam 2024 so he can continue to build his feud up with Punk.
There could also be the chance that McIntyre returns at Money in the Bank to be a surprise entrant in the ladder match, similar to what Brock Lesnar did in 2019. This would allow him to not only get his World Heavyweight Championship back but will let him continue his feud with Punk as well.
We will most likely see Drew McIntyre back in the WWE very soon, possibly getting revenge on CM Punk and costing him a match of his own.
