Florida State Head Coach Mike Norvell Insists Team Is Not Checking Out After 42-16 Loss

Florida State Mike Norvell

Florida State has had an awful start to the 2024 season. They were ranked no. 10 in the country heading into the season, but everything has gone downhill from there. The Seminoles have suffered losses to Georgia Tech, Boston College, and Memphis. Their only victory was a narrow five-point win against California. On Saturday, they collapsed in the second half against SMU, leaving the program with more questions. After the game, head coach Mike Norvell insisted the team was not checking out.

Florida State HC Mike Norvell On Latest Loss

You’ve already lost when you have to tell the media your team is not checking out. This season has been a nightmare on the field. Neither side of the ball has been good. Nothing has gone right for a team that was eager to show the college football world they belonged. The collapse in the second half caused many to question whether players had already checked out during the season. Mike Norvell is adamant that isn’t happening.

“I don’t anticipate any of that. And to be honest, I’m not gonna allow it. If I see somebody that pulls back, they won’t be a part of it.”

The loss drops them to 1-4 overall. At this point, Florida State will be lucky to make it to a bowl game. A winning record is still within reach, but things have to change immediately for this team. Unfortunately for this team, this was supposed to be the easy part of their schedule. It only gets tougher as ACC play begins.

Looking Ahead

Florida State has some tough games coming up. Next week, they are on the road against the Clemson Tigers, who have looked better since their week one loss to Georgia. After that, they have trips to Miami and Notre Dame on the schedule, where the Seminoles will be heavy underdogs. Considering the collapse against SMU, it would take a transformation for this team to even keep those games competitive. Beyond this season, the play on the field could have massive ramifications. There could be a mass exodus of players to the transfer portal and recruits could start questioning whether they want to come to the program.

The season isn’t over by any means. Teams can turn things around, but fans should be concerned by these types of quotes from Mike Norvell. Florida State went through a rough patch, but many fans were hopeful that last year would be the start of many winning seasons. That does not seem to be the case and the program is feeling the pressure to win. They have to figure out things fast or things will go from bad to worse very quickly.
