Mayweather vs Pacquiao Rematch Faces Major Venue and Date Uncertainty
Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao have once again been delayed, with fresh reports indicating a change in venue and date for the fight. The event, once expected to be one of the most interesting boxing comebacks of recent years, is now shrouded in doubt.
Originally reported earlier this year, the Mayweather vs Pacquiao rematch was set to be a historic clash of boxing’s greatest, more than 10 years after their first bout in 2015. The original match was one of the highest-grossing boxing matches of all time. But since the announcement, there have been several contradictory reports that suggest the second fight may not go ahead.
Exhibition vs Professional Bout Dispute
A key area of contention between the two boxers has been the format of the match. Mayweather has argued that the contest would be an exhibition bout, in line with his recent post-retirement fight.
In contrast, Pacquiao has stated that the fight should be an official match, with all the trappings of a professional boxing match. This has led to uncertainty about whether the bout will be legitimate. And major boxing promoter Eddie Hearn recently hinted that he had heard the fight could be called off entirely, adding to the speculation.
Venue and Date Reportedly Changing for Mayweather vs Pacquiao
According to reports from Boxing Scene, “The individual added that the date for the anticipated follow-up bout to the most lucrative prizefight in history said it may also change, from September 19 to mid-August. Further reports included that it made no sense to put it at The Sphere – it’s not connected to a casino,” said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the evolving talks.
The originally planned venue at The Sphere is no longer being considered for the event. Instead, discussions are now focused on moving the fight to an MGM-affiliated location in Las Vegas. The two potential venues are now T-Mobile Arena and MGM Grand Garden Arena, more traditional boxing venues with a history of hosting major bouts.
Logistical Concerns Behind the Shift
According to an unnamed official privy to the conversations, the decision not to host the boxing fight at The Sphere came down to the structure and logistics. This was reportedly due to the venue not being directly attached to a casino resort. The new venues at MGM are preferred for their better facilities for fight week activities, media infrastructure, and spectator accommodation.
Streaming Plans Still Intact For Mayweather vs Pacquiao
Even with the ongoing uncertainty around the Mayweather vs Pacquiao fight, the event is still set to stream on Netflix, as the platform continues expanding into live sports coverage. Even with streaming arrangements in place, the ongoing changes in venue and scheduling have raised questions about whether the fight will ultimately take place as planned.
In the meantime, the Mayweather vs Pacquiao contest is still up for grabs. There is still active negotiation, but no official confirmation on the date, nature, or official arena. What was once expected to be a straightforward blockbuster event has now become a complex negotiation process. Fans are now waiting for a final decision on whether the long-awaited rematch will actually take place.
