Gunther vs. John Cena: The Ring General Has a Chilling Message for the Face of WWE
Well, well, well. Look who’s back. After a brief hiatus following his loss to CM Punk at SummerSlam, the man they call Gunther has made his grand return to WWE Raw. And in typical Gunther fashion, he didn’t just show up to wave to the crowd; he came to dominate. The Austrian powerhouse is back, and he’s already making waves in the “Last Time Is Now” tournament, all for the supposed honor of being John Cena’s final opponent. Thrilling stuff.
On Monday’s Raw, Gunther squared off against NXT’s Je’Von Evans. To absolutely no one’s surprise, the Ring General made short work of the young talent. It was a classic David vs. Goliath scenario, except this time, Goliath brought a sledgehammer and David was armed with, well, youthful optimism. It went about as well as you’d expect. With the win, Gunther stomped his way into the quarter-finals, looking every bit the unstoppable force we remember.
After the match, because wrestlers can’t resist a good social media monologue, Gunther took to the internet to deliver a message. It was short, cold, and to the point. “A very successful comeback. First round completed. On to next week,” he stated, before adding the real kicker with his signature stoicism: “But I think it’s no secret – the last time is me. The Ring General.” Chills. Literal chills. Or maybe that’s just the air conditioning. Either way, the message is clear: Gunther isn’t here to participate; he’s here to take over Cena’s retirement party and turn it into a funeral.
What is this “Last Time is Now” Tournament Anyway?
For those of you who’ve been living under a rock, WWE has decided to turn John Cena‘s retirement into a whole spectacle, creatively titled the “Last Time Is Now” tournament. The grand prize? A one-on-one match against the man himself at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13. It’s Cena‘s swan song, his final bow, the last hurrah for the guy who defined an entire era of wrestling. And, of course, everyone wants a piece of that history.
Gunther now finds himself in the quarter-finals alongside a motley crew of WWE‘s finest, including Jey Uso, LA Knight, Solo Sikoa, and Sheamus. It’s a stacked bracket, but let’s be honest, does anyone really stand a chance against a focused and frankly annoyed-looking Gunther? He’s set to face the winner of the Carmelo Hayes vs. Bronson Reed match next week, and I’m sure both of them are just thrilled at the prospect. The winner of that match moves on to the semi-finals, one step closer to a date with destiny, or in this case, a date with a very angry Austrian.
Why a Gunther vs. Cena Match is the Only One That Matters

Let’s cut to the chase. While the tournament is filled with talented superstars, a final showdown between Gunther and John Cena is the dream match we never knew we needed. It’s a clash of generations, styles, and philosophies. On one side, you have Cena, the ultimate WWE good guy, the face of the company for over a decade, a man whose mantra is “Hustle, Loyalty, Respect.” On the other, you have Gunther, a brutal, no-nonsense European technician who believes the mat is sacred and respect is earned through pain. It’s the irresistible force meeting the immovable object.
Think about the storytelling potential. Cena, the beloved hero, looking for one last triumphant moment before riding off into the sunset. Gunther, the conquering villain, aiming to spoil the party and cement his legacy by retiring a legend. It’s pure, unadulterated wrestling drama, and it writes itself. A victory for Cena would be the perfect storybook ending. A victory for Gunther, however, would be a monumental passing of the torch—or rather, a violent snatching of it. It would instantly elevate him to main-event status and establish him as the new final boss of WWE. Personally, I’m here for the chaos. Let the Ring General reign.
