Errol Spence Jr Set For Summer Comeback Against Tim Tszyu In Australia

Aug 3, 2012; London, United Kingdom; Errol Spence (USA), blue, and coach Derrick James, center, react after losing to Krishan Vikas (IND), red, in the men's welter (69kg) round of 16 bout 5 of boxing during the London 2012 Olympic Games at ExCeL - South Arena 2.

Errol Spence Jr is reportedly training for his highly anticipated return to boxing this summer and has lined up a significant fight with former world champion Tim Tszyu. The anticipated fight would mark Spence’s first time in the ring in almost 24 months and the start of a new phase of his career.

Spence, 36, has been out of the ring since July 2023, when he was on the losing end of a one-sided contest with longtime foe Terence Crawford in Las Vegas. That was a single-elimination, “best of three” fight for the undisputed welterweight title and saw Spence stoppage-lose in the ninth round. It cost him his world titles and ended a streak that had seen him become one of the biggest names in 147-pound boxing.

Life After Crawford Loss

Spence was widely recognized as the top welterweight before he faced Terence Crawford. His endurance, physical power, and relentless pressure style had helped him remain a champion for several years. That standing was especially impressive considering the life-threatening car crash he survived in 2019. Some wondered if he would ever be as good as he once was.

Instead, Spence answered those doubts by returning with strong victories over Danny Garcia and Yordenis Ugas. Those performances restored confidence in his abilities and set the stage for the long-awaited showdown with Crawford. However, when the two finally met, Crawford delivered one of the most commanding wins of his career.

Move to 154 Pounds Confirmed

Following that loss, speculation surrounded Spence’s future. Questions were raised about whether he would remain at welterweight, seek a rematch, or move to a new division. Recent reports indicate that Spence has chosen the latter path. He is expected to make his debut at 154 pounds against Tim Tszyu on July 25 in Australia.

The bout would represent a major challenge immediately upon entering the super-welterweight division, as Tszyu remains one of the weight class’s most recognizable contenders. For Spence, the move could provide renewed energy after years of difficult welterweight weight cuts.

Tszyu Looking to Rebuild Momentum

Tim Tszyu enters the expected matchup with momentum but also with something to prove. The Australian star recently earned a unanimous decision win over Denis Nurja in Wollongong earlier this month. That win kept him moving forward, but the scrutiny around his recent setbacks means every round of this next fight will carry extra weight.

That result followed another dominant performance against Anthony Velazquez in Sydney last December. Those victories helped steady his career after a difficult stretch at the world level. It also reminded observers that he still carries real stopping power when he’s locked in and fighting with confidence.

His most recent title fight ended in a seventh-round stoppage loss to Sebastian Fundora in July 2025. Before that, Tszyu had also endured a damaging defeat to Bakhram Murtazaliev in 2024 after previously losing a close split decision in an earlier meeting.

Despite those setbacks, Tszyu remains a dangerous and proven contender. Reports have also stated that Tszyu recently appointed respected trainer Jeff Fenech as head coach. The decision followed another training camp shake-up, with a flurry of changes in his corner. The inclusion of Fenech could be vital in the lead-up to such a big fight.

High Stakes For Both Fighters

The potential July showdown is of major importance to both men. For Spence, it would prove that his career has not ended on a sour note, despite a loss to Crawford. A successful comeback at a higher division would soon see him again in the top ranks.

For Tszyu, a victory over a former pound-for-pound champion would help re-establish his credibility in the division and enhance his chances at world titles down the track. If it takes place, the bout would be one of the summer’s most intriguing and important for two boxers looking to regain their momentum.
