Chris Weidman Sends Warning To Conor McGregor Ahead Of UFC Return
Chris Weidman thinks that Conor McGregor will come back to the UFC, but he has also cautioned that the comeback might be much more challenging than many would imagine. This point of view by Weidman is significant since he experienced a similar injury and is aware of the physical and psychological obstacles that come after.
In April 2021, Weidman broke his leg in a tragic fight with Uriah Hall. A few months later, McGregor suffered a similar injury when he fractured his leg during the third fight of the trilogy with Dustin Poirier in UFC 264 in July of the same year.
Since both men had suffered one of the most traumatic injuries in combat sports, Weidman is sure that he can be open when discussing what McGregor might encounter once he is finally back in the Octagon.
Weidman Optimistic McGregor Will Fight Again
In a recent interview with the UFC on Paramount YouTube channel, Weidman indicated that he thinks McGregor will fight again. He cited McGregor’s return to the UFC drug-testing pool as a good indication that the former two-division champion is serious about making a comeback.
Weidman explained that for a fighter to re-enter the testing pool and go through that process, there would need to be a real intention to fight. He suggested that going through the effort without plans to return would make little sense. That view aligns with recent comments from UFC CEO Dana White, who said over the weekend that McGregor’s comeback is looking positive. UFC 329 on July 11 has frequently been mentioned as a possible destination for his return.
First Fight Back Can Be the Hardest
Although Weidman is optimistic about McGregor’s future, he also stressed that returning after such an injury presents serious challenges. He stated that McGregor has had sufficient time to recover physically since suffering the injury in 2021. However, he added that the first fight back can be extremely difficult because it is often hard for an athlete to feel like the same person they were before the injury. According to Weidman, healing the leg is only one part of the process. Rebuilding trust in the body can be a far greater challenge.
Personal Experience Reveals Mental Struggle
Weidman reflected on his own UFC return to competition and described how trauma from the injury affected him in unexpected ways. He said that during training camp, he repeatedly threw kicks to become comfortable again. Everything felt normal in practice, but once he entered his first real fight after the injury, the reaction changed completely.
Weidman explained that after being kicked, he instinctively tried to throw one back, but his body refused to respond. He described it as a shocking reminder of how deeply a traumatic injury can affect the mind, even when the body appears healed. That experience is why he believes McGregor’s comeback will depend on more than medical recovery.
Mindset May Decide McGregor’s Future
Weidman has pointed out that the greatest fight that McGregor could face now could be the mental one and not the physical one. He claimed that the previous champion is still extremely talented, but it will depend on where his head is at the moment; he will have to compete again. He added that externally, it seems that McGregor is more focused on faith and putting life in order, which could be exactly what he needs before returning to elite competition.
Conor McGregor’s UFC comeback is one of the most talked-about topics in mixed martial arts. While fans continue to speculate about dates and opponents, comments made by Weidman serve as a reminder that the most difficult phase of the journey might not be getting into the cage, but having to believe the body once inside the cage.
If McGregor does return this summer, the fight could reveal whether he has truly overcome both the injury and the doubts that come with it.
