Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor have a long-time clash. They trash talk against each other and say things that increase the percentage of them fighting soon. The Southpaw is on rest because of his injury to the toe. It was decided that the Irshman would return quickly, and he would fight in the UFC 303. The Notorious was going to fight Michael Chandler in UFC 303.
Yet, just two weeks before the fight, an injury resulted in the decision to pull out. He claimed a broken pinky toe. This reason sparked a lot of criticism, and while former opponent Dustin Poirier wants to give “Notorious” the benefit of the doubt, he can’t help but agree with the people who are questioning Conor not joining the UFC 303.
Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor’s first fight
“Dude, a pinky toe?” Poirier said on The MMA Hour. “I’ve fought with so many injuries. Like Conor said, he fought with a lot of injuries. I’ve fought with a lot of injuries over the years, but a pinky toe doesn’t seem like a reason to pull out of a fight.
Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor have a long-standing rivalry. This is not the first time they are trash-talking against each other, but their first encounter was in 2014 at UFC 178. After trash-talking against each other, they fought in UFC 178 in 2014, where McGregor dominated his opponent and won with a knockout in the featherweight division.
They again fought seven years later. Seven years later, they faced each other again in the main event of UFC 257. This time their fight was different because they fought as lightweights. Other than that, the tables turned around, and Poirier dominated Conor McGregor and emerged victorious against McGregor. This victory led to a third match at UFC 264, where Dustin Poirier won again after McGregor suffered a severe leg injury.
Trash-talking between both fighters
They trash-talked against each other, as it’s part of the fight and it’s normal between fighters. But they were not like this from the start, although Dustin Poirier and McGregor were mostly on friendly terms leading up to their rematch. The first real trash-talking and tensions rose before their third fight. It was due to the promise that Poirier made to donate, but he didn’t fulfill it.
After their bout, McGregor’s behavior was really bad, and it was obvious to the audience as he lashed out at Poirier. It was okay until Dustin, but the notorious was even making threats against Dustin Poirier and his wife.
Things getting serious after a few events
After the fight, mostly, the matter is settled and it’s over, but Conor doesn’t stop there; he continues to talk against him even more. “He crossed lines you can’t come back from,” in the same interview mentioned earlier, Dustin Poirier said. Given this animosity, Poirier, known as “The Diamond,” is ready for another match with McGregor if the chance comes up.
“I want to whip his a**. The other day, I saw him say something. He’s trying to bring that out in me. He wants me to fire back. I just go about my day. But, of course, I want to say something right back and try to set up a fight with him. But it is what it is.” Since his last fight with Dustin Poirier in 2021, McGregor hasn’t stepped back into the octagon. Meanwhile, Poirier recently competed for the lightweight title at UFC 302 but was defeated by Islam Makhachev, who won by submission in the fifth round.
