The Atlanta Dream finished the 2023 campaign with a 19-21 record,  which was good enough for the fifth-best record in the association. Although they were swept by the fourth-seeded  Dallas Wings, the Dream have gotten off to a good start this season, posting wins in two of their first three games.

This includes an 83-78 win over the Wings on Tuesday night. In that contest, four of Atlanta’s starting five scored in double figures.  Allisha Gray paced the team’s offense with 21 points, three assists, and three steals on 8-for-17 shooting from the field and 4-for-9 from beyond the arc. Cheynne Parker-Tyus added 16 points and two rebounds,  while Rhyne Howard contributed a double-double that included 15 points and 10 rebounds. She also had four assists.

The Dream trailed by eight points at the break. But thanks to a solid defensive effort,  Atlanta outscored Dallas by a 43-30 margin in the second half, including a 24-16 edge in the fourth quarter.

On the other side of this matchup, we have the Minnesota Lynx,  who have produced three victories across their first four outings and own the second-best record in the league. Minnesota began the season with a pair of wins against the Seattle Storm before falling to the Connecticut Sun.

However, they rebounded from that loss with a convincing 84-67 win against a New York Liberty squad that went to the finals last season. Napheesa Collier scored 15 points, 12 rebounds, and four assists. Alanna Smith also scored 15 points, while Bridget Carleton and Kayla McBride added 14 points apiece.

The story of this game was Minnesota’s defense. They raced out to an early 31-17 in the game’s first 10 minutes of action.  After New York trimmed the deficit to four points at the break (44-40), the Lynx outscored its opponent 40-27 in the second half, including an 18-9 advantage in the final frame.

Not only that, but the Lynx — who have the top defensive rating in the association — held the Liberty to just 38.2 percent shooting overall  and an abysmal 24.1 percent from the 3-point line (7-for-29).

Can the Dream keep pace against an opponent that plays at an elite level at both ends of the court, or will the Lynx roll to their second straight victory?
