Rookie quarterback Drake Maye is progressing quickly in this Patriots offense. After ultimately not being named the starter for Week 1, Maye is still getting a lot of practice time with the starters. CBS Sports Reporter Evan Washburn said that with the third overall pick getting 30 percent of the first-team reps in practice, the team sees him starting at some point in the 2024 season.

Washburn also said that backup players in a normal situation get five to ten percent of first-team reps, so Maye getting 30 percent in Week 2 is rare. It also shows that Jerod Mayo and the rest of the staff have a lot of confidence in the rookie quarterback. This high level of participation could mean that Drake Maye could be the Patriots’ starting quarterback this season. It could depend on how well Jacoby Brisset plays. If Brisset looks solid and is winning games, the team will likely hold off on putting Maye in, but if it’s Week 7 or Week 10 and the Patriots are struggling to win games, you could likely see Maye getting the starting job.

Alex Van Pelt’s Comments

Offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt had some great things to say about the Patriots’ first-round pick in a press conference on Thursday.

“The biggest thing is every moment he has a chance to learn — whether it’s in the meeting room, on the practice field, running the scout team, on the sideline, the pre-game meetings — just understanding the process…He’s a sponge. He sits there and takes it all in. He’s doing great on the field as well.”

It’s a great sign that Van Pelt thinks highly of Maye. If he stays with the team long-term, that will create some much consistency with the offense and will increase the confidence of whoever is the starting quarterback in the seasons to come. That didn’t happen when Mac Jones was the starter. There were multiple offensive coordinators during his time in New England. That couldn’t have been good for Jones’ confidence and development with him always having to learn a new system. That wasn’t the only problem that Mac Jones had, but the offensive coordinator carousel certainly didn’t help. Hopefully, things will be different with Drake Maye.

The Patriots’ Starting QB Going Forward

Jacoby Brissett is going to have to do more for the Patriots to be successful this season. Even with the Week 1 win, New England still only scored 16 points. It’s not all the QB’s fault because the Pats have one of the weakest receiving cores in the league. Still, Brissett will have to make it work if he is going to keep the starting job.

If the Patriots’ defense continues to play at an elite level and they brush by with wins, Brissett is more likely to keep being the starting QB longer. But if he starts to rack up interceptions or struggles to throw many touchdowns and the team starts losing because of that, look for Drake Maye to become the starter. The QB battle was close in training camp and preseason. It won’t take much for Jerod Mayo to make a change at signal caller.
