Breaking News: New Orleans Saints Fire HC Dennis Allen

Dennis Allen was fired by the New Orleans Saints earlier today.

Dennis Allen has been dismissed as the head coach of the New Orleans Saints after a disastrous 23-22 loss to the Carolina Panthers yesterday. The firing comes after a seven-game losing streak, including losses to the Denver Broncos and Carolina Panthers. Special Teams Coordinator Darren Rizzi will become the interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Dennis Allen Fired

Dennis Allen’s time as head coach of the New Orleans Saints has come to an end after a disastrous seven-game losing streak. The Saints started out promising with a two-game winning streak, including a 44-19 win versus the Dallas Cowboys. Sunday’s loss dropped Allen‘s overall record as head coach to 26-53. Allen was previously on the New Orleans Saints coaching staff as a defensive coordinator and senior defensive assistant from 2006-2010 and 2015 to 2021 before accepting the head coaching job when Sean Payton left.

Allen’s First Head Coaching Job

In January 2012, the Oakland Raiders hired Dennis Allen as the team’s 18th head coach after he spent the previous season with the Denver Broncos as defensive coordinator. In his first season as head coach, the Raiders finished 4-12. That offseason, the Raiders faced many issues, including the salary cap and the loss of draft picks due to the previous regime. In his second season, Allen finished with the same record of 4-12. After a Week 4 loss in 2014, Dennis Allen was fired by the Oakland Raiders. He sat out the rest of the season from coaching before returning to the Saints as a senior defensive assistant under head coach Sean Payton.

Final Thoughts

The New Orleans Saints will turn to a new head coach for the 2025 season after a disastrous stretch. The franchise is currently around $77 million over the cap, according to Spotrac. The Saints head coaching position may not be the most intriguing position to be filled.

First-time head coaches that will be hot commodities will be Detroit Lions Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson, Detroit Lions Defensive Coordinator Aaron Glenn, Houston Texans Offensive Coordinator Bobby Slowik, Buffalo Bills Offensive Coordinator Joe Brady, and USC’s Lincoln Riley. Previous head coaching candidates include former six-time Super Bowl champion Bill Belichick and former New York Jets Head Coach Robert Saleh.
